3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Soonah (1120) - Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA - FEB 20, 2008
From Firemoose15 via trade a while back. Thank you! The pour was a fairly standard one for a porter. Super dark brown with lighter brown and ruby highlights on the peripheries. The head was two-fingers or more tall and tan. Clingy bits of lacing. The aroma was roasted malt, chocolate, light licorice and even a little bit of spicy hops. The flavor was heavy on the roasted malt and spice with chocolate and licorice nicely cutting through. Fairly lively carbonation initially but that dissipated quickly. The mouthfeel was fine, unremarkable. A nice, roasty porter.

bottle. pours a jet black, with a thick, incredibly dense, tan head with great retention and nice sheets of lacing. smells of bittersweet cocoa, coffee, burnt wood, as well as some raisins and berries. bitter semi-sweetened dark chocolate taste with more roasty coffee notes backing it up, in addition to more grapey and raisiny notes, as well as a light floral hop character. slow, lingering, pleasant bitter finish, leaving a sort of grapey wood aftertaste, with a very light sweetness for balancing; quite dry. medium bodied and lots of creamy carbonation, for a very silky mouthfeel. i always want porters to be thicker, so that they can be stouts, but this is an exceptional example of the style, and i very much enjoyed it.

Pours pitch black with a good sized tan head. Nose has noticeable cocoa powder tones and coffee notes as well. Flavor is more along the roasted edge. as it warms up there seems to be a sweet edge that borders on being berry influenced almost. Stays nice and rounded and a good aftertaste is left to linger. Feel is smooth. Carbonation is higher. Drinkable, yes. I like.

served cold from a 22 oz. bottle. pours a dark, dark brown with a tan colored head that dissipates rather quickly. i didn’t notice the lacing, sorry. the aroma is great with roasted malts, a hint of coffee, maybe some fruity notes? the flavor is great. roasted malts all over, with hints of everything else noted in the aroma coming at seemingly different times. a great, great porter. one of the best i’ve had in a while.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 masto (77) - Helsinki, FINLAND - FEB 8, 2008
Bottle. Dark brown. Head is uneven in color and dissolves very quickly. Strong aroma gets even through my cold and has liquorice, roasted malt and coffee. Smells like a dark beer should even if my nose is not as sharp as it could (have a cold).
This has a myriad of small flavors. Every mouthful tastes different. Roasted malt is the main flavor but all the other stuff gets through. Has coffee, chocolate, hops, butter, some straw?berries, some liquorice, other things I have trouble placing with my limited experience . Bitter finish that I love. Aftertaste could be fuller but that’s the only caveat I can think of. Love the low carbonation and the oily, drinkable mouth feel. Excellent. 090208

Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma is dark, ripe fruit with a bit of coffee. Great flavor of coffee and fruit. Great mouthfeel and just the right amount of carbonation. Nice slightly bitter finish.

Pours a deep but discernable brown in color. Aromas of peat, berry, alcohol and bitter chocolate. Sharp at first, but pretty smooth on the palate. Slightly bitter finish. Flavors of good hops, cherry and strawberry, drying at the end. The water is a player in this beer, and I get some minerality from the yeast and water.

This bottled brew from Patrick767 at a rating party poured a head of bubbles that were and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation black colored body and a fair lacing. The aroma was brown malt mild hop and dark malt. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish hoppy aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of dark malt and brown malt. A decent one that I would consider having again.
