Bottle from Santa: Boy this poured like a stout, nearly opaque and a large frothy tan head that produced very good lacing. The aroma has notes of burnt and carmelized malting, light mocha and licorice, aromatic and floral hops, dusty yeast esters and a touch of coffee. The taste starts with a twangy dark fruit and smoky character before given way to chocolate and malty sweetness. The finish displays some dryness and very sublime bitters. The feel is quite lively and has a bit more heft that most porters. While this is not a baltic which I figured it would be a first, it is also not like most of the porters we get here in the states. I liked it for what it was.

Bottle from Swedish "Systembolaget".
Pitch black color with a nice brown head. Burnt sort of smokey scent. Extremely burnt taste, but not so much after taste.

Black color, brown head. Roasted scent, malty and roasted taste. Rather mellow, specially trying to compare it with last time I tried it. Smooth to medium mouthfeel, rather low bitterness.

Bottle (500ml). Poured oily opaque black with slight reddish highlights and a solid, lasting light brown head. Oddly sweet and floral hop aroma, very light milk chocolate malt, a little coffee character. Lovely smooth chocolate roast malt taste, lactic and lightly nutty, mild floral hop and alcohol bitterness in the finish. Silky mouthfeel, very nicely carbonated, with gentle lactic acidity in the fairly short finish. Very nice, somewhat more warming than many porters, easy to drink

Bottle from somewhere in North Carolina. Pours cola brown with a medium head. Good retention, moderate lacing. Nice roasty, mocha aroma. Taste is a little lighter than I expected, but what is there is good... roasted malt, coffee, nuts. Creamy feel.

Bottle from Alexander Wines, Coventry, drank at The Penguin with Octo and Dirtman; "Violets growing out of a cowpat aroma, rust. Pitch with a thick nicotine head. Milky, rusty...nice blackcurrant undercurrents. Coal-dusted. Really good coal-dusted liquorice notes. Light sulphur." That’ll do.

I have a winner for rating #2800. From a bottle, new arrival at John’s Grocery. The body is very dark brown, near black with traces or garnet at the edges when held to light. The head is long lasting and medium khaki colored. The aroma is rich roasted coffee with some good hot chocolate. There is also a hint of fresh peas. The taste is lightly roasted almonds with some espresso in the finish. There is a little bit of bread crust and even some tangerines in the finish. The body is relatively thin and smooth. Everything I look for in a porter. This is a great beer, not just an amazing porter.

From a 500 ml bottle, this was the fourth beer sampled at Cellar’s Nøgne Ø on Friday. Pours a dark mahogany brew with a thin tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt barley, caramel, some milk chocolate and bread dough yeast. Not much hop presence in aroma. Taste is semi-sweet, fruity, and some raspberry/coffee. A slight bitter aftertaste. Very good porter.
