Best beer of the night at the Publick House near Boston. Deep ruby-red medium-bodied porter with flavors of toffee and coffee, and a slightly smoky finish. It tasted like a true British porter, whereas most American porters taste like stouts.

Draught at Capone’s: Aroma of chocolate, malts, and caramel. Poured pitch black in color with a large, creamy, dense, rocky, brown head that lasted throughout. Great looking head. Opaque. Excellent lacing. Flavor is medium sweet and slightly bitter. tastes of chocolate, roasted malt, light caramel, and light maple syrup. Medium body. Dry texture. Soft carbonation. Roasted malt and chocolate finish is dry. A very nice porter.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective Porter tasting on 12/4/08: This brew is a solid brownish-black color with a medium thin and rocky light brown head that dissipates steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt and dark chocolate plus a touch of coffee. Medium, round body with flavors of roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate and raisins. Light smoky character throughout. The finish is soft and roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Pretty good all around.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 sayravai (4526) - Helsinki, FINLAND - AUG 22, 2006
(Bottled, Brewed July 3rd, 2006) Very dark reddish brown color with a medium, foamy, beige head. Strong, bittersweet, licorice-chocolatey aroma with some ashy and alcoholic notes. Dry and ashy, quite malty, coffeeish flavor with licorice hints. Long, bitter and dry-ashy aftertaste. Slicky-oily, slightly rough, medium to full-bodied palate with medium carbonation. A very nice, balanced and enjoyable porter. Quite close to the Koff Porter - yet easier to drink, since it’s not as dry and bitter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Braudog (4473) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - SEP 8, 2011
Bottle. Midnight black with an initially nice tan head, but it settles quite quickly. The aroma is of exceptionally bitter cocoa. The bitter drinks with a chalky impression, but I believe it a mind trick as a product of the dry bitterness of pure dark chocolate. Fairly light body. (#4239, 9/8/2011)
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 tiggmtl (4467) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 31, 2006
Ashy charcoal, bittersweet chocolate, a berry-like fruitiness and salt in the nose. Opaque, dark brown body with a low, off white head that recedes to ring with some lacing. Charred roastiness interplays nicely with bittersweet chocolate and fruity characteristics. Medium body is very dry with moderate carbonation. Bottle (GBBF, Aug-05) sampled with MartinT, Rastacouere and Siroy.
