4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 tennisjoel (1105) - Rochester, Minnesota, USA - APR 12, 2007
Nice complex aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee beans. Appearance is opaque black with a creamy tan head. Flavor is balanced between the sweetness and bitterness. The hops are subdued but yet still play an important factor in the game. Very enjoyable. I’m interested in trying more Nogne beers, as this is my first one. I’m half Norwegian, and proud of my heritage for putting out a quality product here.

Bottle.
Pours deep black with a dark-tan head; the aroma is a lovely blendy of sweet light chocolate cake and coffee, some robust fruity (blackberry?) notes along with a definite vinous tinges. After the sweet aroma, the flavor is relatively dry and nicely balanced, hints of smoke, burnt coffee, vinous whispers, a lovely dry finish. Mouthfeel is relatively light despite the 7%, making it lovely to sip without the bursting intensity of some stronger variants. This is quite an impressive porter, and I’m very glad that I got to enjoy the whole thing in sips over the course of an evening, rather than simply trying it at a shared tasting. Bravo!

500 ml bottle, via Mr Walker and sk8viking. Completely black pour with a small and creamy brown head. Very good retention, moderate sediment in bottle. Very chocolaty aroma, a little yeast, roast, and some coffee. Flavor is similar to aroma, chocolate malt and a hoppy bitterness up front. Finish is chalky with a drying yeast character and a little burnt toast. Mouthfeel is full bodied and slightly oily in texture with soft carbonation. Very nice overall, full of flavor with a pleasant mouthfeel.

Nøgne Ø Porter is a very, very dark brown beer that is extremely opaque. The pour produces a compact, but dense tan head that seems to have a slight purple hue to it. Coffee is prominate in the aroma with a hint of chocolate and ripened fruit. The flavor is robust and quite complex as it shifts from coffee to bittersweet chocolate to dark, aged fruit. A subtle anise flavor is also detectable after the temperature of the beer rises some. The finish has a rich semi-sweet chocolate flavor with some roasted malt/coffee bitterness. The body of this beer is full and the mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Nøgne Ø Porter is an very well made and well banaced beer that reminds me more of a stout than a porter...

Poured a very dark brown. Slight frothy head. Incredible amount of chocolate, and a good, smooth, creamy mouthfeel. This isn’t an over the top porter, but I think it’s one of the best I’ve had. Well balanced, and easy drinking. Enjoyed every ounce of it. Definitely worth seeking out.

A high overall rating due to a great tasting AND very drinkable beer. The palate is its downfall, but also makes it a fantastic beer to enjoy the great taste of a fine porter without having to nurse it and think about every little sip. You can almost gulp this beer and still appreciate it. Nose of chocolate covered raisins and a hint of yeastiness. Flavor is big malts, and again, chocolate covered raisins. Let me tell you, that flavor is fantastic in a porter. Anyways, the downfall is that it is a little light on the tongue, and there is just a tiny hint of wateriness before the hops dry out the finish and round it out. A great beer but it could be a little heavier, then it would be perfect.
