Gresskarøl er en plage å brygge. Mesken blir som en tykk grøt som det tar en evighet å sile av. I denne ølen brukte vi tørkede biter av gresskar. Avsilingen tok 7 timer. Men litt gøy var det likevel!

Pumpkin Ale is a nightmare to brew. The mash becomes impermiable and it takes forever to collect the wort from it. In this beer we used dried pumpkin. The runoff took 7 hours. We still enjoyed it though.

On tap at Patricks. Amber colour with a beige head. Flavour is roasted malt, fruit, beries, sugar, yeast, sourness, apricot, pumkin, spices, pine. Weird beer.

Tap @ Cardinal. Pours a really nice pale-tan head which leaves beautiful lacing as the beer "disappears". The color is clear deep amber. Aromas of toffee and caramel from the malts, maybe some spices if you put your mind into it. Complex taste that I can’t describe, but it’s not what I expected from a pumpkin ale. But it’s really good and balanced. Too bad it’s so limited as it’s a really good ale from Nøgne Ø.

On tap at Cardinal. Hazy chestnut body with a fingerthick, cappuccino colored head leaving excellent lacing. Toffee, caramel and butterscotch on the nose. Inviting. Sweet caramel, alcoholic, bitter, acidic. Well balanced. Full body, smooth. Abrupt finish with bitter tones lingering and a dry tongue. Good stuff.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours dark hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma of spicy caramel, toffee and coffee. Taste is moderate sweet malty, lots of spices, some maybe from the hops, some from pumkin spices. Moderate bitterness.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger (only 1 keg available there, I’m afraid). Cloudy orange-brown colour, large and creamy beige head. Sweetish fruity and vegetal aroma (the pumpkins, I assume), also notes of piney American hops. Effervescent mouthfeel. The flavour is fruity with notes of pumpkins, but is not too sweet. Spicy notes too, decent American hops throughout. Very drinkable.

On tap at Håndverkerstuene. Hazy dark orange colour. Small to no head. Aroma is reminiscent of a porter. Mostly caramel, but some coffee is also present. Flavour is suprisingly bitter. Caramel, coffee, liqorice and pumpkin. My first pumpkin-ale so I’m not quite sure what to expect really. A decent beer overall, but probably not the best pumpkin ale out there.

On tap @ Patricks. Hazy, dark orange body with a nice beige head. Quite mild aroma, had to use some time to identify the nuances. I found malt, caramel, spices and some kind of fruit that might has been the pumpkin, but I’m not to familiar with pumpkin aroma/flavor. Flavor is super refreshing fruity, soft caramel, spicy, sweet malt and just a hint of fruit/berry acidity. Fine, well balanced body, balanced in flavor and actually quite complex and very quaffable at the same time. Compared with a few other pumpkin ales I have sampled I like the idea of enhance the fruity flavor from the pumpkin instead of drowning everything behind a big amount of spices. Both fun and very nice.

On Tap at Patricks, Kristiansand. The second time togheter with the brewer, Kjetil. Unclear brown color, nice of-white head. Aroma has malt, pumpkin and spices. Flavor is fine sweetness, medium bitterness, herbal notes from the pumpkin. A fine and interesting beer. Fine with food.

From keg @Schouskjelleren, Oslo. An opaque brown beer, with a thin sand-colored cream head. Nice smell of sweet-scented toasted malts, rounded spices and herbs, and some fine grassy/earthy hops. Taste is on the sweet side, but it’s a refined and rounded sweetness. The pumkin addition is not overdone, shines trough with a soft herbal and light spicy character. Silky mouthfeel. More than medium full. Spices and a light bitterness linger in the finish. Nice!

On tap @ Patrick’s, Kristiansand, only moments before the keg was empty and a lot of people’s smiles faded... :-S Also, it’s my first pumpkin ale AND my first beer at Patrick’s. Weeee! :-D Pours a hazy dark bronze body with a small white head. Nose is caramel, pumpkin, hints of white pepper and wet leaves. Taste is strong peppery herbal notes balanced by deep malty caramel tones, burnt toast and hints of pumpkin hidden way in the back. Not much of it really, but this is still a good beer. Full body and a high carb level which serves well to provide a fresh mouthfeel in what is otherwise a rather sweet beer. A perfect autumn ale; solid stuff from NØ. Too bad the mash was "super stuck", otherwise more people would be enjoying this around the world...
