COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We brewed this ale only with the famous sake yeast No. 7 from Masumi Sake in Nagano, Japan. On advice from Masumi’s master brewers we fermented this ale very slowly at low temperatures to bring out No. 7’s fabulously fruity character. This is a beer, but has some flavors found in a sake. A great combination!

Slightly hazy orange color, tiny white head. Aroma of green apples, strawberries and straw/grains. Crisp carbonation but full-bodied. Very fruity brew, flavor has apples, strawberries, lots of alcohol (but not too burning). Lingering salty finish reminds me about #100. Strong, fruity but nothing really special. Gimmicks and fancy package are the most important things in this product.

Bottle. Crystal clear light amber body with virtually no head. Nose is piney hops, hints of wild strawberries, dry yeasty notes, roasted malts and a substantial amount of alcohol. Taste is very boozy; first a slight hint, then a massive torrent which lasts through the entire palate, ending up warming your throat on its way down. A bit harsh. An unusual sake-like yeastiness (no wonder) blends with hints of strawberries at first, then fading to a more brutal boozy pine flavor. Bitter, grassy hop tones in the aftertaste. Red Horizon is a very strange, yet very interesting beer from Nøgne Ø. A bit over-the-top boozy for me, and considering its experimental nature and relatively sizable price tag I doubt I’ll buy it again. Pretty cool, though. :-)

Bottle. Hazy orangeish amber pour with a short white head that doesn’t last long. Fruity, yeasty, slightly funky aroma has notes of caramel, orange, ginger, lychee and rice. Flavour is very similar to the aroma but with more citrus, more spice and more sweetness. Mouthfeel is thick and oily with moderate carbonation and a lingering bittersweet finish. A very nice, interesting combination of beer and sake styles, this was more beer-like than I was expecting. Complex, even challenging, but still very easy to drink, and the alcohol is extremely well hidden too. Bottle size is just about spot on also.

Bottle. Hazy reddish/brown with a minimal white head. Very sweet, fruity aroma with some malt. Sweet, fruity taste with notes of alcohol. Reminded a bit of Rosé wine, but much stronger of course. An interesting beer in many ways, good but not excellent.

Amber color. No head. Aroma is a bit sour and fermented fruits. Taste is boozy, fruity and herbs. Probably a bit unfair rating but it didn´t appeal to me.

250 ml bottle @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu. Batch #430, brewed 08/06/2009.
Tasted with Dark Horizon 3 and Sweet Horizon. Pours a copper colour with a minimal head. Medium sweet aroma of oak, caramel, malts and mild hops. Bitter flavour with floral hops and caramel. 75 IBU it is. Notes of alcohol too. Full bodied, oily texture with low carbonation. Fruity, bitter and warming finish. Better than DH3 or SH.

Draft @ Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen. Pours a slighlty murky orange/brown color with no head. Has a sweetish malty woody caramel aroma. Sweetish warning malty woody flavor with hints of caramel and yeast. Has a sweetish malty woody warming finish.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a small off-white head. Intense, sweet aroma with malt and dark fruits. Remote notes of alcohol bordering terpentine, but not quite hitting it. Okay, but quite cloying. Flavour is sugary sweet with dark fruits. Full-bodied. Notes of brandy and slightly of vermouth. Finish is sugary sweet as well and with some notes of alcohol. More outspoken notes of vermouth here. Overall quite interesting and well-made; although the alcohol was present, it wasn’t close to revealing how high the percentage really was. But quickly becomes cloying. 12.09.10.
