COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To enhance the flavor of our Sunturnbrew, we aged it in bourbon barrels for a year. We think it was a good year!

25cl bottle from El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. @home 05-03-2014.
In short: a sour peated dark ale.
Pours dark with some little tan head. Short head retention, some lacing. Smoky, wood aromas. Medium body, silkt texture, soft carbonation.Taste is smoky, wood, caramel, tart, fruity. Smoked flavours prevail and hide most of the others. Peculiar and interesting.

28/II/14 - 25cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 17/VII/17 (2014-229) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!

Note: tasted side by side with the regular version.
Pretty cloudy dark purple brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit dirty, sourish, rotten, vegetables, bit smoky. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: vinegar sourness, peated, unpleasant stuff, sourish, smoky, some caramel, sour red berries. Aftertaste: bit smoky, sour, sweet notes, vinegar touch. Meh, something’s gone wrong here. Do not like.

Arnesen (32) - Tromso, NORWAY - FEB 22, 2014
Pours hazy dark brown and leaves a shortlived crispy foam. Aroma is of dark roasted coffee and dried fruits with hints of chocolate. Taste is of roasted malt, coffee and whiskey/bourbon at first, then dried fruits such as figs and raisin turns up. Leaves a longlasting bitter palate that brings this beer up in complexity and accompanies it well. A good barley vine-style beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPad

My Bottom Line:
Rich peat smoke, caramel and candied fruit are surrounded by surprising acidity in this memorable Barrel-Aged Smoked Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam slowly disappears into the mahogany.
-Peat smoke and fruity acidity are a new blend to me. I wonder if the tartness was wanted though...
-The nose doesn’t let on to the finish’s acidity.
-The wooden character is harmonious with the peat smoke.
-The acidity makes the brew feel lighter and less alcoholic than it would normally be.

Bottle.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours tiny hazy dark reddish brown with a frothy goldenish beige head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sour, smokey and tannic with peat, burnt wood, smoked sausages, vanilla fudge, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, alcohol, sweet dark bread, hairspray and hay. Taste is sour and tannic with sweet dark bread, red wine vinegar, peat, tar, charred wood, alcohol, orange zest, smoked sausage, ash and hay. Mouthfeel is sharp, tart, tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sour as smokey with bread, lemon juice, vinegar, burnt wood, toffee, peat, tar and ash. Very complex but regular sunturn is much better and it’s a pity it’s sour. I guess smoked oud bruin is the new thing...

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2014 Finally the big day for us good heathens is here, the winter solstice! That should of course be celebrated with a barrel aged sunturnbrew. It pours a deep brown body with a tiny, off-white head that reduces to partially covering film, and not much lacing is left on the glass. The aroma is pretty intense, sweet and roasted, with massive amounts of peat, whisky, sour wood smoke, cigarette, tobacco and sausage. The taste is heavy sweet and moderate bitter, and a light sourness as well. The very strong flavours are roasted with peaty whisky and sour smoke, sweet fruits and fermented red berries. It feels rather vinous, it is full bodied, has an oily texture and soft carbonation. An intense and good beer, but not as good as the regular sunturnbrew: the lovely hoppy notes of the latter has been exchanged for sourness, fermented berries and more peat.

Bottle - Sweet oaky notes with a vinous character. Smoke and date are in the background. Opaque dark brown with a rich but thin brown head. Oak and sour cherry dominate, with peat and the other original flavor far in the background. This is so different than the original, doing it side by side I would have never guessed. The barrel adds a flavor akin to a Flemish Red, and takes away everything that was unique and interesting about the original brew. Although I like this, I am disappointed at the lack of continuity between this and the original.

25cl bottle from Vinmonopolet, Storo. Pours clear mahogany with a rather small, tan head. Moderate smoky aroma with oak, peat, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, dried fruits and hints of alcohol. Sweet and complex with lovely and balanced flavours. The smoky notes seems to have faded a bit with aging, and the beer is surprisingly well balanced. Alcohol is noticeable, but well integrated. Excellent winter warmer, especially on this day!
