4oz pour at Churchkey’s Nogne O Tap Takeover. Pours a clear, rootbeer brown with a ring of white head. Nose is a mix of booze and juniper, brandy, smoke, some sour cherry. Flavor is hot, acetic, malt vinegar, smoke, stinging nettles, lemon, moonshine. Hot finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A very dark brown beer with a weak and beige head. The aroma is strognly roasted with peat, rich maltyness and berry sweetness, hint of vanilla and salt liquirice. Taste is roasted, peat, sourness of red currants, some salt liquirice. Almost full bodied, still quite easy, even almost a fresh due to berries. Not so good as the normal Sunturnbrew, this is not so intensive.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured from bottle at Churchkey for a meet the brewer event. Aroma is astringent alcohol. Smoke notes, meat character. Too much smoke, barrel didn’t improve taste unfortunately. Not a fan of this particular one at all.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Nice dark, smoked, oak-like-tasting beer with a wooden smell. I asked for a barleywine here and that's what they suggested me to try. It tastes a bit different from other barleywines I tried (I think it's because it's also a bit fruity) but definitely I good beer that's worth trying.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
250ml btl from Vinmonopolet; tan thin head, dark black brown grey body.
Rotten berries outta spout, better scents from mug. Smoke, berry juice, tar.
Strong taste; fermented berries, smoke, roasted malts, black prunes, nice.
Heavy body, suitable low carbonation.
Fruity aftertaste where berries dominate over the tar and smoke.
Overall a heavy drink.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Ikke like vellykket... Jeg likte den originale Sunturnbrew betraktelig bedre, og tror jeg delte ut 4 poeng. Denne får trekk for en surhet jeg ikke syns harmonerer særlig bra med resten av brygget. Medium konsistens.

25cl bottle from El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. @home 05-03-2014.
In short: a sour peated dark ale.
Pours dark with some little tan head. Short head retention, some lacing. Smoky, wood aromas. Medium body, silkt texture, soft carbonation.Taste is smoky, wood, caramel, tart, fruity. Smoked flavours prevail and hide most of the others. Peculiar and interesting.

28/II/14 - 25cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 17/VII/17 (2014-229) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!
Note: tasted side by side with the regular version.
Pretty cloudy dark purple brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit dirty, sourish, rotten, vegetables, bit smoky. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: vinegar sourness, peated, unpleasant stuff, sourish, smoky, some caramel, sour red berries. Aftertaste: bit smoky, sour, sweet notes, vinegar touch. Meh, something’s gone wrong here. Do not like.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours hazy dark brown and leaves a shortlived crispy foam. Aroma is of dark roasted coffee and dried fruits with hints of chocolate. Taste is of roasted malt, coffee and whiskey/bourbon at first, then dried fruits such as figs and raisin turns up. Leaves a longlasting bitter palate that brings this beer up in complexity and accompanies it well. A good barley vine-style beer.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Rich peat smoke, caramel and candied fruit are surrounded by surprising acidity in this memorable Barrel-Aged Smoked Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam slowly disappears into the mahogany.
-Peat smoke and fruity acidity are a new blend to me. I wonder if the tartness was wanted though...
-The nose doesn’t let on to the finish’s acidity.
-The wooden character is harmonious with the peat smoke.
-The acidity makes the brew feel lighter and less alcoholic than it would normally be.
