To enhance the flavor of our Sunturnbrew, we aged it in bourbon barrels for a year. We think it was a good year!

Bottle bought at Systembolaget in September 2012. Almost clear mahogany with a small head. Rather vinous with smoke, leather, bourbon and malt. Some spices in the finish. An ok one.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy deep brown color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with average retention and some light lacing. Aroma of peat smoked malt with some bourbon notes and quiet a bit of residual sugar notes. Taste is a sweet mix of caramelized malt with plenty of residual sugar and some bourbon notes with limited vanilla coming out with a heavy peat smoke finish. Body is full with limited filtration and medium carbonation with some warming alcohol notes discernable. This is a very intense experience with some complexity and limited drinkability (good idea to bottle this in nip size bottle). The bourbon notes might be a bit too straightforward and probably too much residual sugar kind of ruined what could have been abetter experience.

@basunen: trevlig vinös doft med tydlig fatton. Ganska snäll smak men trevlig att smutta på. Lite torr eftersmak. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Cloudy dark brown, minimal head. Aroma of peaty smoke with some tart wine. Mid sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel. Peat and bourbon, peppery heat and red wine. Warming finish with salty bitterness. Very intense.

Bottle from Brewberry. First off, I am no fan of Smoked nor Sours... Body is dark brown with thin, mocha, oily head. Nose is malts with some bourbon strain, vanilla and spices. Taste is sour, acidic, some vanilla and spicy finish. Not sure about this one. Bourbon definitely in the syrupy finish as well.

Bottle, shared @ Three Boars in Edmonton. I hadn’t cared much for the original Sunturn Brew, which I had on tap in Champaign Illinois, so I was excited to see what barrel aging did to the base beer. I found that it did improve things overall, but underlying the vanilla sweetness added by the barrel character was a persistent phenolic quality in addition to the peatiness. Still, much more enjoyable than my first experience.

bottle shared by tom10101, thanks! pours cloudy dark brown with a minimal light beige head, some retention. peaty nose, slightly acrid red fruitiness, maple, some sweetness and slightly disturbing acidity, woodsy notes. soft carbonation, medium body - oily, peaty, cloying, slightly harsh grassy, lightly acidic and unbalanced finish. seems like a good use of barrel at first for its underwhelming barrel flavors but the acidity makes me think otherwise.. still.. not horrible

Cirrhosis (1266) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 9, 2013
Cola brown with a creamy long lived cap floating on top. Wacky, wacky aroma. Heavy peat, notable alcohol, and just like the regular it has a noticeable medical element in the nose. Mmmmmm..... smoked Robitussin. Seems to be an underlining sourness here. Tar, smoke, sweetness, alcohol, other weird stuff. No beer taste like the Sunturnbrew! is it good??? maybe, is it completely bat shit waked out different? Yes.
