3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Murky brown with a small off white head. Aroma is tart, wood, lactic, forest floor, light iodine. Taste is medium+ sweet, hardly any bitterness, medium sour. Medium body, oily/sticky texture, medium carbonation. Tart, dry and light astringent finish. Very far from the original, and questionable if the result is intentional. Drinkable nonetheless.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours opaque orange amber with almost no head. Aroma is caramel, lactic, lots of wood, prune, smoke, earthy grassy and dried fruit. Taste is medium+ sweet, medium bitter and quite sour. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Finishes alcoholic mouth-dryinging with a lasting taste of sour wood.
It’s rather hard to relate this to the original beer. It’s in no way undrinkable, just quite surprising because it’s more sour than smoked.

Color : dark clear amber beer with small persistent ivory brown foam, small carbonization and very mellow. Smell: peat, malt, amazing complexity and some alcohol flavor. Taste: sweet, peat, smoked, malt, and some acid touch. Really strange taste and amazing ! Aftertaste : peat, and some soils with an amazing complexity of sweet and dry sensation.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Intense beer from the get-go. Indeed, strongly smokey, peaty, iodine- and char laden malts come across as rough initially, while the bourbon is obviously complementaly, adding just more alcohol and a gently vegetal, woodsy tone to an already heady brew. A lot of roast, anise, malt vinegar, worcestershire sauce from the malt’s sheer density peek up, making for a dense, palateable, but not quite balanced enough, the smoke not being enough of a balance point for the sweetness and roast intensity. Acidity remains remote in comparison and so does bitterness, most of it seemingly stemming from the roast. Earthy, heavy brew that does not carry its richness in a body bearing the same royal finesse as mellower Nogne beers do.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
250 mL bottle from Les Fleurs du Malt in Lyon, France, served in a stem glass side-by-side with the original version at a tasting at Chris’ place. Pours hazy deep caramel with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant. The nose is mellower than the original, with smoke notes replaced largely with a big boozy bourbon and caramel toasty malts. The flavour is moderately sweet with alcoholic notes and a touch of sourness. On the palate, it is medium-full in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this was a bit of a disappointment. While the smoke is gone, the barrel actually takes away from the overall package; the nose is nice, but it becomes too boozy and slightly sour. 2012-12-01

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (25cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Very dark reddish brow colour. Half-inch light beige head, good retention, some lacing. Aroma of malt, smoked meat, bourbon, chocolate, coffee, dark/dried fruit, red wine vinegar. Medium body (deceptively light considering the ABV), soft carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. Taste hits off semi-sweet, malty and fruity, but takes a surprisingly acidic/vinegary turn, leaving a sub-optimally balanced impression.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark ruby with a negligible head. Aroma is bourbon, smoke and lots of oak.Mouthfeel is nice and slightly oily. Taste is quite sweet, with some caramel. The smoke isn’t as dominating as with the regular edition. Alcohol present but not prevalent, a bit vinous but not in a bad way. A pleasant beer to sip down on a cold night.

Bottle @home from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham
Rich butterscotch and vanilla on the nose of this hazy dark brown beer, the peat is completely obscured. Slightly sour, very boozy and creme caramel with the richer dried fruit malt flavours coming in behind. I think it spent too long in the barel TBH, very alcoholic in finish.
