Ingredients: Malted barley, wheat, malted wheat, sugar, hops, yeast and local Grimstad water. It is very difficult to brew a complex and balanced Belgian-style tripel ale, but we have made an attempt at brewing one anyway! Our respect and admiration for those who master the skill and art of brewing excellent ale of this style is limitless. Tripels often pair with cheese, seafood and fresh vegetables.

It’s boiled over after opening, because of extremelly high carbonation. Belgian yeast, sour citrus fruits, cheap bubble gum, some woody smoke and cheese in aroma. Taste is soursweet, malty, spicy, herbal, yeasty, and resiny with bitter and dry aftertaste. Heavy, full bodied, tasty compilation of three styles: tripel, saison and IPA.

500 ml bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy bright gold color with a small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of apricot, pear, apple, white grape, black pepper, honey, bread, clove, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of apricot, pear, apple, white grape, black pepper, wheat, honey, bread, clove, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of apricot, pear, apple, white grape, clove, honey, bread, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/yeast balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is pretty well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice tripel style. All around good complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast ester, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Spina @ irish pub. Chiara con schiuma poco persistente. Corpo morbido, torbatura soffice, si fa bere molto bene.

Slightly hazy brilliant golden under a creamy/foamy white head. The aroma is a little doughy but also with a fair dose of mango and pear and something like apricots. Big bold estery flavor full of Belgian light fruitiness like mago/papaya/ pear with a sturdy barnyard pale cereal malt tone, a light bit of dust, and finishes on a cereal grain and faint banana flavor

Visual: A menacing tiger on the label for a menacing 9% ABV beer... Pours golden marmalade orange, no head, very thin ringed retention, lots of micro CO2 steady streams scattered throughout. Nose: faint peach fruity malts. (lvl-2)-pungency Attack: balanced smooth mouthfeel Mid-palate: tingly crisp mouthfeel, (lvl-5)-sweetness, (MAIN) peach/apricot, grassy malts, mild alcohol bitterness Finish: fruity-sweet + lightly smoked soft-hoppy bitter crisp finish. Summary: Once again, Nøgne Ø doesn’t disappoint with their take on a Tripel. Full-flavoured yet supremely drinkable, this one is awesome and smooth for a 9%.

500 ml bottle bought at The Bottle Shop in Sai Kung.

Looks: Translucent golden honey colour with traces of yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head with white foams which fades in 40 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing and slight carbonation.

Aroma: Quite fragrant barley and wheat malt, with banana, light vanilla, sugar, very light whiskey, light alcohol and Bel yeast.

Taste: Very sweet light malt, with very strong smoke, whiskey, banana, vanilla, sweet caramel, toffee, strong molasses, very light alcohol, phenolic, light spices, very light yeast, lemon, light bitter hops and grass.

Body: Mid to light. Slick and oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Light maltyness, dominated by strong sharp spikes of smoke and whiskey, in a thin but really oily body. Sweetness is prevalent but still pleasant, plus fairly low but notable banana oil, caramel and light toffee. Phenolic but with very light spicyness. Fair Bel yeast and lemony grass. Interesting...

Booze: the 9% alcohol is slightly noticeable. Otherwise very well hidden throughout. Nice!

Hoppiness: No nose, lemon and light grass taste. Bitterness is pretty low-fi for a Tripel, ended in mostly sweet and light astringent finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Sweet and smoky to mouth.

Comments: I applaud the brewer for their interesting idea in putting smoky whiskey taste in their version of Tripel. The end result though, is like a near-finished articles: maltyness is lightweight, strong but nice smoke and whiskey taste, decent sweetness but not enough Bel yeast and typical fruity ester taste to complement. If this is in a 330ml bottle with a lot more yeast, than it’ll be really good. Right now, it give you the feeling of being promising but missing the all-important Belgian yeast to go up a level. Good but not great.
