stravale (2062) - Near Carrick-on-Shannon, IRELAND - APR 5, 2012
Bottle from Great Grog, Edinburgh
Deep orange amber, some haze, thin frothy white head, some lacing
Aroma of citrus hops, orange, tangerine, some soft grapefruit, light grassy hops, very slight peanut, juicy soft caramel malts, soft orange zest, subtle but quite complex, well blended
Taste of resinous hops, soft pithy grapefruit, soft orange zest, orange, juicy citrus fruits, soft grassy hops, slight pine, juicy malts , soft caramel, everything very well blended, complex, nothing astringent, dangerously drinkable, alcohol very well masked, more fruits in the taste than aroma, more understated than another DIPAs....but perhaps a bit too understated?
Palate soft carb. medium body, fairly light viscosity compared to other more viscous DIPAs. Finish as main flavour, soft bitterness, soft orange zest, clears off palate very well.
Overall - very elegant double IPA, very well balanced, nothing over the top.

#1402 draught; nose is cane sugar, bittersweet hops, weak red grape, feel is quite fat, carb is mediumheavy, taste is sweet fruits, dry hops, cloves, late weak bitterness

Mortlach (962) - Rome, ITALY - MAR 27, 2012
04/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Gradevole e ben fatta.

Poured a little flat. A cloudy IIPA which has a great nose, which did not follow through on the palate.

Muddy orange-amber with creamy beige head / Dull nose of cooked citrus & pineapple, and caramel / Medium to full body, sweet and somewhat syrupy, with biting hops and good finish / Somewhat clumsy flavors of caramel, cooked citrus, and pine / Disappointing, but some concern this bottle is fresh.

500ml bottle @ Cardinal, Stavanger. Hazy deep orange color with a nice little head. Aromas of citrus and clean hops and some light fruits. Good dosage of bitterness to balance the heavy sweetness from the malts. Full body. A really great IPA.

Fresh yeasty blast with a chunky white head that slips away quietly. Bombastic pink grapefruit nose develops to match a burnt orange body - second half of the bottle pouring darkens further. Citrus burps amidst suprisingly smoothered alcohol hops - for 8.5% to only see these coming through in a glassy shine on the initial palate was probably the most important characteristic of the beer. White spirits notion on the nose hits harder as things settle and the stamper of home-brewing ends in the pampers of the glass. A fine brew all round. (Bottle, Vino, Edinburgh)

500ml bottle, Coppers, Ncl. Earthy fresh hop aroma, with initial caramel taste. There’s peach, gooseberry and mango flavours, with some jamminess. Had a thick sediment that held together very well during the pour, resulting in a good looking beer, with just a trace of haze.A really great DIPA, that warms slowly on the way down.
