COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The name of this beer is "Peculiar Christmas" in English. This spiced Christmas ale is strange - and indeed a fusion beer. We have gathered inspiration from the Norwegian drink “gløgg”, and as such this is quite an uncompromising brew. Best served with “goro” and “fattigmann”. Recommended serving temperature 10°C/50°F, but you are free to try on higher temperatures...

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, caramel, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Cascade hops; 5 different spices, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

15°P, 30 IBU, 6.5 ABV.

Complex and unusual beer. Strong ginger and herby notes and it helped cure my cold which was good! Tastes like Christmas and would probably go well with Christmas cake.

Bottle. Dark brown color with a medium-sized beige head. Spicy aroma with ginger, cinnamon and malt. Taste is very spicy with ginger, cinnamon, some herbal notes, sweet malt and some roastiness. Medium to full bodied, some bitterness in the aftertaste. Too sweet and way too much spices for me.

Aroma is super intense and really unique. Hits with clove, cinnamon, and ginger. strong spice on the first taste and strong aftertaste. Pours thick jet black with thick off white head. Nice thickness to the palate. Overall, great brew. Recommend drinking with a friend!

Dark, almost black color. Big tan head. Plenty of lacing. Huge aroma of cinnamon right up front. There is a piney aroma as well, but it comes and goes. Nice malty flavor then the cinnamon takes over. Not bad but a bit too spicy for me.

Pitch dark red body with a big off white head. Incredibly strong aroma of spices, specifically lots of ginger, cinnamon. Flavour is spicy and sweet, again with lots of ginger. Quite interesting.

On tap at Taproom 307. Great holiday ale. Nutmeg, Christmas spices... some cinnamon, clove, and ginger... malty and sweet.

Appearance Very dark brown with a hint of ruby, pours an impressive head — thick and creamy. Aroma Winter spices: cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, maybe a little bit of fresh hoppyness too. Taste Sweet and spicy, warming — what you’d expect from a Christmas Ale. Ginger is perhaps the strongest flavour, but it’s a nice mixture of winter spices. Not overwhelmingly strong, but it is a rather sweet beer, so one to be sipped slowly. It’s bottle conditioned. Overall ‘Peculiar Christmas’ in English, although not that peculiar. Quite typical, really, but certainly a tasty one. Very nice and warm spices. My immediate reaction was that I’d like some gingerbread with this, although the beer is in fact a bit of a Christmas pudding itself! I would like to get a better impression of the ‘beery’ characteristis, especially the combination of malts. The spices are a bit overwhelming, and you might even think that you’re drinking a cup of strong chai instead of a beer. Nøgne Ø does some very good beers, so there shouldn’t be a need to hide behind all these spices. Still, this is what you want on a cold winter night, it really does warm you up nicely. They say that the beer is inspired by ‘gløgg’, i.e. mulled wine, which is a popular beverage in Finland too around this time of year (we call it ‘glögi’). The recommended serving temperature of the beer is 10°C/50°F, but on their website they hint that you might try it warmer — I take it that this is to suggest actually heating it up, like you would with mulled wine. Well, I didn’t try this, but I imagine that this could be interesting; I have had some nice warm krieks before.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown with huge stable beige head. Already while pouring a room-filling aroma reminds of bath salt. Extremely spicy, herbal, soapy aroma: cinnamon, ginger, caradamon, coriander, clove, maybe some orange and orange zest. A nice smelling combination, but do I really like to drink something like that? The taste resulting from those ingredients is too soapy for me. Maybe some more sweetness would give a better taste, maybe the result would be a too heavy beer then - I can’t say. Not bad, exceptional but also weird.

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber with small off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is a raisin malt and spice aroma. Medium mouthfeel with smoke and Pepper. A good spice beer from Nogne.
