The name of this beer is "Peculiar Christmas" in English. This spiced Christmas ale is strange - and indeed a fusion beer. We have gathered inspiration from the Norwegian drink “gløgg”, and as such this is quite an uncompromising brew. Best served with “goro” and “fattigmann”. Recommended serving temperature 10°C/50°F, but you are free to try on higher temperatures...

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, caramel, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Cascade hops; 5 different spices, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

15°P, 30 IBU, 6.5 ABV.

This was a tasty beer, but something was a little off in the flavour. Anyway...poured a dark opaque coke-like colour with a tan head that dissipated fairly quickly leaving a little lacing. Nose for brown sugar, ginger, clove - and here’s that off flavour showing up - a little camphor. The taste profile was very similar with a nice maltiness, clove, ginger, and once again that medicinal note that persisted into the aftertaste. It’s like they use black cardamom rather than green, but without the smokiness.

Dark brown beer with a huge beige head. Smells like glögi. The smell is good but thankfully the taste isn’t as strong on the glögi side. It’s more of a mild IPA combined with glögi. Really good and balanced. Medium body. Very drinkable and refreshing. A really positive surprise!

Dark brown with off-white head. Aroma is clove, malt, very gingery and other christmas spices Taste is very spicy with the same spices. Not my kind of beer, the spices are overrunning the maltyness and hoppyness.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2014 Bottle 50 CL. Pours dark brown with white brown head and an spicy scent. Notes of clover, some spices, some cinnamon, gingerbread. The clover and some other odd herb or spicy taste is too strong in this. Stinging harsh taste which would need something to balance it out for example some more hops. Kind of weird beer. Not too enjoyable.

Appearance: A hazy chestnut colored beer. A low off-white head with some lacing and some curtains.
Palate: Medium low carbonation, a watery texture. A small body with a slightly dry finish.
Overall: Good, but the hops have become tired.
Note: Bottle 500 ml at home. (Vintage 2012) Reviewed 2014-01-09.

Bottle - under the Peculiar Yule moniker. Murky copper pour with a short tan head. Aroma is very herbal and spicy. Gingerbread, herbs, licorice notes, spice and caramel in the nose and follows with the flavor profile. There’s a weird minty note to this as well. Maybe chocolate covered peppermint??? Or peppermint in a gingerbread cookie?? Very odd but not off-putting. Body is medium with a soft feel and light carbonation. Ends with more herbal notes, spices, light licorice, chocolate, gingerbread and caramel notes.
