3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Glouglouburp (5562) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 20, 2013
In short: A toasted, sugary and resinous hoppy red ale. Ok.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Clear redish-copper body topped by a very medium beige head leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is very toasted with a medium presence of leafy hops. Taste is toasted crunchy cereals, quite a bit toasted residual sugars for a 6% IPA, sweet jelly beans, baked red berries pie, notes of red meat. Leafy hops with plenty of resin and a strange sensation of eating dry autumnal tree leafs. A commanding sticky resinous bitterness that somehow doesn’t seem to hide the residual sugars. This beer is what we usually refer to as a hoppy Red Ale (unofficial style) more than what I expect from a north american IPA. First half of the pint was nice but then the toasted sugars and hops resin grew tiresome. Overall just an ok beer, drinkability is was pretty low considering its style and gravity. This is my rating number 5555, yes, finally, rating number 5555, and nothing happened, I didn’t win anything, oh well, that’s 7 years I’ll never get back.

(Rating #4748)
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Viper666 (2696) - Saint-Hubert, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 27, 2013
My Bottom Line:
Peppery, leafy hop resins are juxtaposed to toasted malts in this lean, Red IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the dark amber.
-Body is lean and drinkability relatively high despite the flavor intensity.
-The hop signature is harmonious with the grain bill.
-Balance is achieved from aroma to finish.
-Malts actually have something to offer other than plain residual sugar or alcohol to support the hops.
On tap at Noire et Blanche.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Lubiere (8243) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 6, 2013
A nice amber to copper IPA with a thin mocha head. In aroma, smooth butterscotch malt with floral hops, not bad. In mouth, a nice musty treacle malt with butterscotch and floral hops, not bad. On tap at Noire et Blanche, Nov. 25 2012.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Quevillon (2213) - Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 20, 2012
Drank on tap (10 oz) at the brewpub on October 19, 2012. Dark amber, little head. Hoppy aroma of hazelnut, slightly malty. Nutty dry malt taste, good hop bitterness, aftertaste of bitter fresh herbs. More malty than usual but well balanced!
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Bean (56) - Quebec, CANADA - OCT 12, 2012
Nice malty nose, impressive ruby red color. Enough hop to support the solid malt profil. Nice show keep brewing Yo.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JulienHuxley (1708) - Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 5, 2012
On tap at la Succursale. Dark amber pour with straw/white head. Aroma is quite malty, toast, piney hops, caramel. Taste is sweet and malty up front, with a long semi-aggressive lingering bitterness that tastes quite piney. Palate is medium bodied and light-med carbonated. It’s decent because it’s absolutely fresh, but this is another example of what I’d call a Quebec IPA.
