Irish Channel Stout is our newest seasonal ale. Released in November, this is an American style stout that has sweet malt flavors of caramel and chocolate, complimented by a crisp bitterness produced by roasted barley and American Hops. The complex malt bill of pale and roasted malts result in this well balanced stout that is smooth, rich, dark and delicious! And watch out – ABV 6.8%! This seasonal will be available on draft through March.

Bottle - Pours black, off-white head. It’s a strange, but good, mix of aromas/flavors. I get burnt pancakes, coffee, and a rich roasted malt... ending with hops.

2015 BJCP Category: 20B American Stout

AROMA: Strong roasted malt aroma. Slight sweetness in the background (baker’s chocolate?). Very faint resiny hops. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque black, no highlights. Large tan foam dissipates rather quickly. Decent lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: Strong roasted malt right away. Dark chocolate flavor in the background. Moderate coffee flavor and bitterness on the finish. Aftertaste is initially sweet but becomes astringent. Faint tanginess. 15/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; smooth texture (a little too bubbly to be creamy). No alcohol presence. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: More than a solid stout, but less than a stellar one. Definitely enjoyable and to-spec. 7/10

Pint can. Coal black body with a sticky cobweb of foam. Aroma of espresso, dark milk chocolate and a bit of char. Flavor shows the same mix plus a bit of graham cracker on the front and some occasional burnt salty popcorn on the finish. Medium body has a pleasant medium carbonation and a decent, if slightly bi-polar balance.

Can. Heavy malt aromas of toasted and dark chocolate, light herbs and earth for the hops and yeast, with a note of cardboard and a hint of whiskey in the background. Head is large, frothy/creamy, light brown with slippery lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, creamy with a soft carbonation and a lightly dry finish. A smooth and very easy drinking Stout.
