Totally black color, like petroleum, with a brown but not very long head. Very intense aromas. Liquorized, like Porto wines and whisky; coffee, chocolate and vanilla; wood. Also a dry fruits note is perceived. Very complex and interesting aroma due to the contact with whisky barrels. Slightly bitter taste despite the IBUS because of the sweetness of alcohol and malts. Regarding alcohol, it is incredible this beer to be a 13% alc. beer. In mout again complex aromas dominated by roasty nuances (chocolate). Medium-high body and medium carbonation. Long and oily finish but also a fizzy sensation is present. Very intense and interesting stout.

330ml bottle from Rosses i Torrades, Barcelona

Pours pitch black with a small bubbly brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, tar, burnt wood, smoke and ash. Taste is heavy, roasty and stingy with whisky notes, burnt wood, smoke and ash. Finish is warming, heavy and stuffy with some stingy whisky and woody notes. A bit unbalanced and stuffy.

Age at least 5 years – but still BBE comes sooner??
Aroma is musty with hayish notes, some wood and licorice. Flavour is musty with woody tones, whisky, hay, some licorice and soy sauce. Not good, I’d expect much more from a barrel aged IS. Well, at least this hides the ABV well.

The Islay influence is bit subtle for my taste but very pleasant. No froth at all, which is fine with me. The brown sugar is very obvious and could be toned down a bit. I think that a bit more aging would be very beneficial.

Bottle and beer dudes tasting at Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Another monster stout/porter from BenH. Appearance - opaque black with a thin crema head. Nose - umami, aloe vera, big boozy notes, burnt wood and salt. Taste - chocolate and seaweed. Boozy plums and then liquorice. Palate - full bodied with a dry texture and a long, rich but very dry finish. Overall - so complex!

Bottle, tasting at Appellation Wines. Black body with a thin tan head. Light lacing. Aroma of oak, smoke, rum, dark chocolate and vanilla. Flavour of chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Medium body with a smooth, oily mouthfeel. Faint carbonation prickle. Rich and tasty, but not particularly complex.
