12-29-07 bottle.
Cloudy yellow orange with a decent head. Smells more like a sour or a lambic. It is fruity and really not bad. Can taste the alcohol - not very well masked or balanced here. Strong flavor and okay palate. Overall, not horrible - just not my favorite style.

2007 bottle, 9% abv. The menu at the brewpub calls this a barleywine, but ESA fits. Pours burnt orange to toffee brown color with a medium sized soapy head. Aroma is very fitting for a Christmas beer. Brown sugar, creme brulee, cinnemon sticks, bread crust, almonds, and maybe a slight bit of citrus zest. Sweet cinnemon and toffee flavor, some gingerbread, brown sugar, donut glaze....in all honesty the malt flavors of this remind me of what a more malty 90 Minute IPA would be like. Similar quality. Some bitter lemon zest and coffee roast appear in the finish with a toasted nut aftertaste that’s only mildly bitter. Medium bodied, warming aftertaste, but not hot. Medium carbonation, very drinkable. In fact, it’s a little TOO drinkable. For a 9% beer, I would like some more slow-sippin’ chewiness. Still, this has a pretty nice flavor.

on tap at NXNW. They call it a barley wine, it is listed here as english strong, I think both classifications would be accurate. Pours very nice ruby color with off white creamy head. Aroma includes of raisin, prune. Flavor includes dark fruit tones, molasses, and even some maple, burnt sugar. Very smooth and sippable for abv. Quite nice.

On tap in Austin while in town on business. Mostly brown with some orange and a little head. Aroma is somewhat light fruit, wheat and is fairly round and calm. It’s also spiced and with some bananna. Flavor is a bit sharp from hop bitterness. Wheat is present along with some spice. Decent fruit and a little underlying malt. Nice finish, though a little thin.

2007 bottle shared by notalush. Pours orange with slight white head. Aroma of citrus, along with spices and some sweetness (apples?) Very malty and fruity to the taste. Pretty light carbonation with a minerally finish. Some alcohol warming as well.

I agree with andrew on this one, definitely a far cry from the other beers at this place, and a little weak on the barleywine scale. Fortunately it is very drinkable.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2010 2007 draft at NXNW. Copper in color with 1/4" of white head. Sweet and malty in taste with notes of fruit. Extremely drinkable, went great with dinner (pork tenderloin). This is among the best beers I’ve had.
