Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Sample at Bodega. This brew is a deep reddish-amber color with a medium thin and creamy light tan head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of berries, yeast and sweet malt. Medium body with flavors of yeast, candi sugar, malt and fruit. Notes of alcohol as well. The finish is ripe fruit and sweet malt with a plum and yeast aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Pours a deep red with a thick beige head. Aroma is yeast, fruit, and brown sugar. Taste is much like the aroma, only with a slight sour that makes this quite a delicious beer. I’ve never had anything sour in a beer before, but this makes me curious.

"Deep red body with hints of brown a massive brown cap with great retention sits on top and leaves behind lots of sticky roapy lacing. Sour yeast some spice in the nose brown sugar can be noticed on deep inhales the smell is incredible. Flavor is sweet and dark with hints of liquorish and brown sugar with coffee in the finish. This is a fully carbonated big belching beer. Apple and wood with a pine quality come out when warmer. This is very authentically Belgium tasting with its own unique flavor a other winner from North Coast."

Bottled. Dark brown, the head looks like a bath sponge! Almost yellow. The aroma is full, with plums and raisins, even a light syrupy flavour. The taste is also full, but not as balanced as I expected. It’s a bit sharp, with the alcohol cutting through - opposite to most of its Belgian counterparts. Also, the sweet syrup in the taste lacks the character you’d expect in a beer this strong.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep amber brwon with a very rich thick persistant head. Smells of dark fermented fruit and syrupy malt. Tastes very fruity, like raisins, prunes, and fermented berries. Tons of flavor that stay in the mouth. Very sticky and some presence of alcohol. Burnt caramel in the aftertaste. Very good beer.

ours deep amber reddish with a creamy lasting head and lacings. Nose is sweet of yeast, berries and red wine. Smooth and full bodied. Taste is sweet with a slight sour and vinous note. Lots of dark dried fruits such as plum, raisin and a little caramel and bubblegum. A vinous and warm sipper. Some syrup and sugar as it warms up. Very nice.

Dark murky brown color with a tan head that vanishes within seconds. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, chocolate and alcohol. Flavor of caramel, vanilla, dark fruit and a bit of alcohol on the back end. Thick and rich.
