Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

ours deep amber reddish with a creamy lasting head and lacings. Nose is sweet of yeast, berries and red wine. Smooth and full bodied. Taste is sweet with a slight sour and vinous note. Lots of dark dried fruits such as plum, raisin and a little caramel and bubblegum. A vinous and warm sipper. Some syrup and sugar as it warms up. Very nice.

Dark murky brown color with a tan head that vanishes within seconds. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, chocolate and alcohol. Flavor of caramel, vanilla, dark fruit and a bit of alcohol on the back end. Thick and rich.

Bottle 0,355 l from System Bolaget. Clear brown, initially thick fading foam. Nose is beautiful, vanilla, marzipan, sweets, chocolate, caramel. Flavor is a bit boring, marzipanish, malty, caramel, alcoholic. A bit of a dunkelish feel to it. Not very big and the alcohol is up front.

Typical sweet Belgian aroma. Flavor has a surprising burnt coffee note that doesn’t show up in the aroma. Lacing is lovely, color is dark and hazy. Mouthfeel seems strangely thin for the taste/style. As it warms, the alcohol becomes very strongly noticeable.

Bottle 12 oz- A tribute to the jazzy monk - thats a pretty good idea and thumps up for the lable-work. The pour is a clear dark brown with a neat inch high latte-brown head. The nose is with caramel, plums, alcohol and burned malts with sweet notes like honney. The taste is disappoitingly anonymous - there are not the power that I expected. High carbonation. The finish is alcoholish with a little burn. I tast the roasted malts, alcohol, sweet corn, almonds and sirup - The taste doesnt really back the ABV imo.

One of the few shining examples of brilliance at beerfest. I will try this one again. That can be assured and banked on.

Flaske: Mørkebrun uklar uigennemsigtig øl. Ikke så pæn. Duft af chokolade og lille karbonering. Behagelig smag af sukker, chokolade og en lille hint af brændt smag. Udmærket øl.

355 ml bottle. Dark, reddish brown body with a nice beige head. Aroma of sweet, overripe fruit, caramel and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malty, dry fruit, brown sugar, a bit vinous and a warming alcoholic finish with balanced bitterness. Sweet, nice and warming.
