Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Beautiful dark garnet-foxy beer with small, yellow-foxy head. Nicely herbal, parsley, dark sweet malts, and some yeasty spiciness. Sweet-roasted/bitter flavour, coriander, spicy esters, ends like celeri salt. Very thick MF, viscous and sticky, but nicely converging flavours. Pretty sweet/roasted - but in comparison to many US Belgian-style beers, pretty convincing! Thanks to Leen & Dirk for sharing!

pours a very nice ruby-brown color with a light tan head. good retention and lacing. aroma is of belgian yeast immediately...light bubblegum, candy sugar, caramel, raisin, subtle cherry vanilla, and light alcohol. flavor is hoppier than expected with slightly spicy hops. also has some muddled bubblegum, raisin, cinnamon and something funky at the end. mouthfeel is a bit watery and the finish is very dry, lingering, and funky.

Pours a relatively clear mahogany color, nice tan head, good retention... Aroma of sweet prune, nutmeg, raisin, muddled yet complex, somewhat yeasty, and a bit of bubblegum... Taste of Raisin, and bubblegum, a bit sweet, and dry, strange sensation... Finishes odd, full bodied... Disappointing, but now i know what raisin flavored bubblegum would taste like...

(12oz. bottle) Good carbonation upon opening. Pours very full head. Damn near overflowed the rim with foam. Looks like I could float a dime on top (if I were into wasting good beer.). Somewhat dark brown body which light penetrates. Light "Belgian" aroma. Not overpowering. Average body and mouth feel. Nice raisin flavor which lingers in the mouth, chased with dark brown sugar. Slight warming in the throat, but not overly like a higher alcohol brew would be. .

I remember this one being pretty strong for what it’s worth... Not sure what else there was beyond the alcohol taste.

A perfect cloud look for a beer. Excellent head. Dark fruit and alchol flavor. It can seem a bit acidic and unpleasant at first, however with a few sips, and learning to drink toward the back of the mouth, the flavor is very pleasant. Stong alchol content and relaxing aftertone.
