Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a reddish-copper with a thick, fluffy, off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, some cinnamon. Mouthfeel is a bit thick. Flavor is really nice, with hints of dark fruits, some nuts, and toffee. Finish is bready and soft. Mild carbonation.

On tap at the brewery, I got this as part of a sampler set. THis poured reddish brwn in color with some fruitiness and a slightly sweet finish.

Thelonious Monk, as it became known at the beer tasting. It was a hodge-podge affair with Belgians flowing left and right and this was another solid offering. Dark brown, thin tan head. Aroma of dark fruits, brown sugar, beets and mild spices. Taste of dark fruits, spice, yeast, sugar and some alcohol. It was very sweet, almost too sweet, but still very good.

750mL bottle, first bottling. Poured coppery-brown with a short, swirly cap of beige head. The aroma picked up darker fruits, warm spices, caramel, and brown sugar with a bit of fruit-inspired sourness.. this really drew me in. The flavor had thicker, candied dark fruit and caramel on the core, surrounded by peppery and other warm spicage.. alcohol prickled the outer edges and amplified the warm finish. Medium-plus bodied with ideal, moderate carbonation on the palate.. much spicier on the back-end.. OK flow, and a very good brew all around.

12oz bottle. Pours brown with small tan head that fades almost immediately. Aroma has some prune, butterscotch, and alcohol. Flavor has some banana, butterscotch, sherry, and dark fruit. Alcohol was really upfront at first but then blended into the malty background. Minimal hops. Made the mistake of not letting this one warm up. It was a little sweet cold, but blended nicely as it warmed up to the appropriate temp. Pretty good. I will have to try a 750ml next time.

Bottle. Light tan head that laces with a golden amber body. Smells of brown sugar and some hops. Tastes like plastic with some prune and brown sugar.

Honey baked biscuit, brown sugar, and caramel malt pour out of a mahogany body with hints of garnet. Fluffy khaki head left only minimal residue. Flavor is belgian yeast, toffee, and a little dark fruit. Alcohol is invisible and carbonation just enough to ignite the taste buds. A pretty good, readily available brew.
