Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottle. Pours brown with small buff head. Aroma is malty and fruity. Nougat, butterscotch, caramel, banana and plums. Big frothy body, quite sweet and malty. Bananas and some phenols. Overall malty sweet with typical esthers and phenols, but laidback and discreet.

Draught at Eni-bru in Osaka. Raisins, dried fruits, sherry, big caramel, and alcohol. Sweet and gets a bit too cloying through the class, probably better ages in the big bottle. Still quite impressive.

750 bottle poured into chalice. Not much in the head retention department but the flavor makes up for it. Malty with raisen and grape with a nice barrel flavor to it. Smooth but it’s got a little plastic flavor which ain’t too good.

25.4 Oz. bottle pours a dark mahogany into thick creamy tan head with heavy lacing on the glass. Soft carbonated bubbles keep a lingering head on the top of the glass. Opening the bottle revealed an aroma of red wine, roasted caramel, sweet chocolate malts and hint of hops. Initial flavor of spice, ryebread and sweet malty caramel slowly fading into a full bodied, well balanced hoppy finish. Expected this one to have a bitter bite since it was at 9.4% alc. but turned out to be smooth and drinkable. Thus far have not been disappointed with any North Coast offerings.

Bottle. Poured brown with a creamy tan head. Sweet aroma of fruits, malt, and a hint of spice. The flavor follows the same but also has some wood character also. Medium body, sweet, smooth, and warming.
