Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottle, bought at Systembolaget, Malmö. Thank you, myrup. Pours lovely deep amber red with a great, creamy, beige head. Great duration and fine lacing. Lovely fruity aroma. Some light tarty red berries mix with heavy plums, raisins and prunes. A little vinious as well, some spicy notes. Medium carbonation, fine oily mouthfeel. Flavour starts off with a tad of tartness, vinious, light chocolate. Dark Belgian sugars, light vanilla. Lots of plums, prunes again. Light dryness. Nice.

Bottle, 9.4%. Sweet aroma, hint of vanilla. Sweet flavour, some alcohol and some brown sugar. A bit too sweet for me and not quite balanced by the alcohol. Sweet apricot.

750 ml.. bottle. 9.4% ABV. Pours a thin head with minimal lacing, over a dark reddish brown slightly cloudy body, and minimal yeast sediment.....nose of esthers, fruits primarily citrus, cherry....tastes of esthers including lots of cherry, some raisin, delightfully complex and somewhat sweet...mouth feel is thick and chewy. North coast labels it as an abbey strong and it certainly meets the style. Quite delicious!!! 11/30/2008

(small) Bottle from Systembolaget When poured it looks like a darker version of Coke, with a small short lasting head. The armoa contains enough citrus to reveal that its an american brew. Chocklaty malts in taste.
