Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Pours a ruby dark copper with a 2 finger creamy tan head. The aroma is earthy, Belgian, candy, sugar, malty, raisiny. The flavor is earthy, lightly sweet, Belgian, malty, little to no ester. The palate is malty and mildly carbonated with a warm alcohol feel.

750 ML bottle shared with Padrefan at Main Tap. Dark pour with not much head. Aromas of dark fruit, raisin, prune, caramel, and brown sugar. Similar flavors with quite a bit of alcohol on the flavor. Nice beer.

Odd 12 oz bottle... I’m used to seeing the big ones, so this was a surprise. Pours a red/brwon with a beige head and aromas of raisins, brown sugar, alcohol and a touch of spice. Flavor is a nice mix of the above... seems driven by a brown sugar/toffee malt sweetness and has some dark fruit that adds complexity. I’d say raisins and dates. Mouthfeel is kind of creamy and there is a little bit of warmth as it goes down... Nice.

Pretty good brew. Bought from Whole Foods Market. Light fruity aroma, off-white/tan head, and pours a rich reddish brown color. The higher alcohol content is well hidden, I didn’t notice the warmth that I noticed on other high gravity beers. The taste disappears quick from the tongue and leaves minimal after taste, not what I expected, but not a bad thing either.

Very nice strong ale. It has the classic Belgian flavor. Nice burn on the throat as it warms. Very hearty like a meal unto itself.

A year old bottle from the celler. Short brown foam tha goes down to a thinn lace. Caramell both in aroma and in the taste. Also present is liqrish and spices in aroma. The taste is quite sweet with a full body and a small bitterness.
