Praetorian (86), Los Angeles, California, USA Sep 6, 2008 Amber in color with a good sized light brown head with very good lacing. The aroma is dominated by dark fruits with a hint of molasses and a strong hops backbone. The flavor is of dark fruits with a little raisin, molasses, oak, and a hint of apples. The texture is creamy. Overall its a very good abbey ale with a very complex and relaxed flavor; very enjoyable m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Sep 6, 2008 Pours with a light brown head that is mostly lasting over an amber hue.
Aroma is of dark fruits - dates, prunes, some grape, and plums and little of hops. Aroma also has some sweetness to it - a little molasses.
Dark fruit flavor with some oak, apples. It is a little bit bitter on the finish, not so much though. Sweet beginning.
Creamy to the palate with lively carbonation. a very good beer. drpimento (785), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Sep 4, 2008 this is one the beer closest to a belgian from us of a that I’ve ever encountered. Bravo! Big foamy frothy textured head and plenty of lace. Soft texture, slightly perfumey. Clear dark rich amber with red highlights. Not too sweet. Great balance. Almost a session considering what it is. djd07 (721), Houston, Texas, USA Aug 31, 2008 Updated: Sep 3, 2008on tap at flying saucer. Has a dark brown color with a small light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is roasted malt and raisin. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a sweet malt and hides the alcohol well. A very good Belgian strong ale from north coast. Edgekrusher (83), , Alabama, USA Aug 29, 2008 Looking at these other rankings, I must have had a bad bottle..... Pours light brown with thick foamy whitish/yellow head. Initial taste is sweet followed by a strong lingering bitterness. swillguzzler99 (19), Glendale, Arizona, USA Aug 28, 2008 Pours light brown with little head. initial fruity taste followed by faintly sweet aftertaste. The alcohol numbs the tongue a wee bit as the taste lingers. A decent brew. BigBeer45 (676), Troy, Michigan, USA Aug 26, 2008 Bottle, drank from a tulip, label reads 9.4% alc., pours ruby with dark bronze mixed in and brown edges, has a nice off-white and tan fine bubbled head that left bubbled lacing on the sides of the glass, effervescent, aromas of brown sugar and molasses sweetness, raisins, prunes, chocolate and caramel, some prunes, caramel and dark malt flavors, gives a alcohol warming sensation on the palate even when quite cool, has a gentle pepper bitterness at the finish, layers the palate and has a creamy texture, nose was varied and complex which gave me a feeling that this brew was going to be great but the flavors are less so and let me down, not to bad just wished the flavors followed the aromas. Prometheus (97), Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA Aug 25, 2008 Dark brown, with a thin head.
Some fruit, and definitely caramel.
Overall, not too bad. Decent alcohol content.
