Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

12oz bottle. Poured very dark amber with a smallish light brown head and almost no lacing. Nose was mainly raisins and light spice, then a smokey-fruit and syrupy body with a caramel-alcohol finish. A fine beer but feels incomplete, as if not quite the sum of its parts.

Pour was medium golden with a medium white head. Aroma was strong of alcohol, malt, fruit, and trappist spices. Smooth brew with a punch. Carbonation was full and well blended. alcohol was hidden a little bit more in the flavor. Good brew. Nice caramel notes in the finish. Would buy again.

pours a deep ruby with little head and little lacing. subtle aroma, but has malt, plum, raisin evident. decent flavor- nothing extraordinary, but sticks with the classic belgian strong points, along with an interesting note of pineapple. alcohol is clear in the finish, but still a very nice beer.

Poured a nice clear copper color with little to no head. Aroma was yeast malt and dark fruit, plums and cherries. Flavor was interesting, almost like a slightly overcooked cherry cobbler, a little burned, a lot sweet, and a bit caramely. A lot going on here, and the 9% is well hidden.

Pours a beautiful rusty copper with a medium tan head that rings the glass. Very sweet caramelized pineapple nose with some Belgian yeast. The taste is also sweet and fruity at the beginning tasting like overripe cherries or plums, but takes on a more bread like abbey finish. Very smooth and creamy body with no hint of the 9% ABV. Pretty enjoyable, couldn’t help turn on some jazz while drinking!

Ruby red/brown pour, with minimal head and some lacing. A burned aroma left me feeling this was some sort of Belgian Scottish Ale (if that makes any sense at all). A taste confirms....really sweet, malt profile similar to a scottish ale... a fruity malt flavor with cherries. Kinda too sweet, but not horrible. A moderate to high level of carbonation. Okay.

Nice, thick brown / red pour, coffee froth. Nice malty straight forward nose. Molasssas, alcohol taste with a bitter / metallic linger. Great smooth palate, overall a nice beer!
