Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Aroma of caramelized malt. Dark brown with thin foamy head. Good clarity. Bit of an astringency that is characteristic of some porters. Mouthfeel is velvety, heavy. Dry finish. Not for guzzling. Flavor is that of dark roasted malts, dark fruits and nuttiness. Great beer.

Pours an opaque dark red with a thin tan head. Head dissipates rather quickly, but leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is sweet fruit, like cherries, raisins or figs. Flavor is dark and sweet, with fruit and caramel notes. Alcohol is warming in the finish, but not overly so, considering the ABV. Not the best Belgian style I’ve had, but still a very nice beer.

750ml bottle. This beer looks great – pours a deep clear reddish amber with 2 finger light tan head with spotty lacing. Nose is dark ripe fruit, caramel, raisins and alcohol. Taste is much like it smells. Sweet dark fruits like figs and raisins and brown sugar with a mild bitter alcohol finish. Medium mouth feel. A bit to sweet for me, but not a bad beer.

Poured a deep amber color with a medium tan head. Very malty/yeasty aroma. Flavor was very earthy. Decent beer.

pours dark red and clear with a frothy light brown head. Aroma is modratly malty, lightly hoppy and boldly yeasty of bannanna and bubble gum, rasins and cherrys. Flavor starts balanced twords sweet, dark caramel, cansy, dark fruit, rasins. Finishes much the same and dry. Medium bodied, watery and livley

Pours dark amber and too clear for the style in my opinion. The head stays ok but has very little lacing. Strong caramel smell with raisins as well. Flavor delivers much of the same as the aroma. A bit buttery also. A little thin on the mouthfeel with a decent yet slightly bitter finish. Not much alcohol burn either for the abv.

12oz bottle. Poured very dark amber with a smallish light brown head and almost no lacing. Nose was mainly raisins and light spice, then a smokey-fruit and syrupy body with a caramel-alcohol finish. A fine beer but feels incomplete, as if not quite the sum of its parts.

Pour was medium golden with a medium white head. Aroma was strong of alcohol, malt, fruit, and trappist spices. Smooth brew with a punch. Carbonation was full and well blended. alcohol was hidden a little bit more in the flavor. Good brew. Nice caramel notes in the finish. Would buy again.
