Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Raisins on the nose, some clove, with a little molasses. Brown with very noticeable red hues. Medium head with minimal lacing. Seems the alcohol prevails more than the complex flavors in Belgian style ales. Certainly not bad, but better Belgian style ales out there--both American and from Belgium (of course).

Mahogany beer with light brown head. Aroma is of caramel, spice. Has a sharp caramel flavor with some licorice, chocolate and tobacco notes. Finishes appropriately dry. Has some unpleasant phenolic character (styrifoam) too.

Pours a deep ruby with a minimal beige head that vanishes quickly, no lacing. Aroma is sweet, plum, almonds, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, plum, light caramel, nutty and detectable alcohol. Medium-full body, sticky texture. Long nutty finish.

Dark ruby color, big cloudy brown head, lace. Raisins, menthol and yeast, quite Belgian, some roasted notes too. Raisins, plums, sweetish with some yeasty notes. Sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden. Fruity, tasty, not the world class, but good brew..

Poured from 12oz bottle a clear chestnut brown with a tighly pack large foam head that persisted. A metallic smell (sort of like scrubbed steel) with a brown sugar and raisin sweetness arises coupled with a fresh cut papaya tangy odor. Tastes of overly ripe aged black cherry together with many other layers of sweet - brown sugar, molasses, raisin, and caramel. There is a slight bitterness on the very edge, just enough to make the roof of your mouth and the edge of your tongue tingle. There is a slight alcohol warming. Overall a nice drinkable sipping beer with a kick.

25 oz bottle, via several traders. Pours a clear reddish tinted amber under a fizzy long lasting beige head. Lots of visible carbonation retained the head for the duration. The nose is strong, malty, fruity, with a noticable alcohol content. The more it warms the more the fruitiness and yeast character emerges. The flavor is heavily malty with a nice contribution of flavors from the yeast. Lots of dark fruits and figs, heavy caramel, some candi sugar, moderate alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fairly thick texture and moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, decent and drinkable, I pretty well liked it.

750 ml bottle. Dark reddish brown. Clear. Light beige small head. Peppery aroma with a bold background of rich malts. Lots of münchenermalts. Smooth texture with lots of malts. Nutty, malty and sweet. Notes of alcohol as the beer is clearly potent. Alcohol aftertaste that is long-lasting. Plummy araoma. Neutral hops. Carbonation balances the warmth.
