Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Draft. Pours dark brown with tan head. The aroma has rich burnt malt along with some carame sweetness. The flavor has lots of bitterness along with some nutty and malt sweetness. The finish has a pleasing bitterness. This was more complex on draft than I remember the bottle being.

Fast dissipating (creamy-ish) off white head. Dark brown ruby in color. The aroma is almonds, sweet, alcohol, raisins/prunes and malts. The taste is sweet and malty with caramel/malty notes. Alcohol burn is evident. The body is a bit watery so the mouth feel isn’t excellent. I enjoyed it overall because it fits my preferences well. The appearance and body were a bit lacking if anything was.

tap. Dark amber brown, with small head. Tofee, caramel, spice, vanilla. OK length and mouthfeel, wish it lasted a little longer.

It pours a nice near opaque black, but with not too much head (at least in a Trappist glass). It does leave lacing though. It smells quite nice though. Dark fruits with spicy malts in the aroma. Very sweet flavor, but a bit metallic. The palate is surprisingly thin too. An all right beer.

I had this in a four pack twelve ounce format. One bottle is plenty. A great ale that (I repeat) should not be served cold! Forget comparisons with its Belgian brethren, this is a unique American tribute to a unique American musician. Very complex, dark fruit, chocolate, vanilla, plum. A jolt of alcohol in the finish, as it should be: Straight No Chaser.

Moderately spicy malt aroma with strong alcohol in the end on the nose. Clear amber color with a medium tan head. Sweet in the beginning but quickly getting bitter and alcohol burn in the finish. Medium body.

Delicious brew. Slightly strong on the alcohol bite but the malt does good to attack that.

Pours a dark brown with a thin tan bubblie head that disapates quickly.Aroma of malt amd fruits. Tatse is a bit metalic. I love Belgiam Strong Ales. This missed the mark a little.
