Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

A very nice offering from North Coast, with a more than appropriate name. Sample this from its 750ml bottle and was very impressed. It pours dark mahogany, and the smell is very spicy, malty, sweetish, and balanced. Caramel, malt, almonds, dark fruit, and a heavy alcohol presence are all apparent in the taste.

Friday, November 17, 2006 Employee Tasting Notes (Belmont Station)--Hailing from Fort Bragg, CA’s North Coast Brewing, this big beer (9% ABW) was smooth and well-balanced despite being high octane. Bolstered by an outstanding label depicting Thelonius Monk with a halo of piano keys, BT was a tasting favorite with a rich reddish hue and a soft, mildly carbonated, "leathery" mouthfeel. The alcohol was well hidden in this spectacular brew.

Aged this one about 8 months. Pours a hazy, murky brown color with a medium sized, frothy tan head. Nice, intricate lacing noted. The aroma is sweet and malty, with candied sugar, caramel, maple syrup, and dark fruits all showing strong. Copious amounts of vanilla and oak come through as well, as does a faint nuttiness. The flavor follows this same sweet, malty path, though it does have a substantial enough hop profile to add excellent balance and drinkability. The medium-full, silky smooth body is slightly syrupy, but not at all cloying. This is a really nice, ultra-drinkable, big Belgian brew.

A dark brown appearance with a ruby tint. The aroma consists of chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, and cherries. The flavor is rather sweet on this one. A lot of milk chocolate flavor but also some caramel, raisins, cherries, and brown sugar. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall this is a very nice beer!

Quite dark brown with a lot of off-white head. Smells of malt, dark fruit, some burnt flavours. Somewhat caramelly and strong metallic notes in a very foamy, fizzy body. None of the Belgian-style yeast you might expect or the complexity. Nicely made but nothing too special.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt notes of nutty and chocolate, light hop note of herbs, moderate yeast aromas of dough and earth, and toffee and brown sugar in the background. Head is small, off-white, with fair lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is hazy brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightyl acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily to creamy, with a lively carbonation, and finishes lightly alcoholic. Full, rich aromas and flavors make this a very good Belgian Strong.
