Taverner (827), San Ramon, California, USA Sep 12, 2007 Damn near perfect beer! Very hoppy, floral, and STRONG. This deserves to be slowly sipped over an evening. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Sep 9, 2007 750ml bottle. Pours an extremely dark amber with a thin off-white head and some carbonation. Aroma is full and sweet with notes of caramel, roasted malt, nuttiness and a twinge of hoppy citrus. Taste is full-bodied and syrupy with initial flavors of caramel and citrus giving way to a sharp and strong lingering finish reminiscent of sweet dark rum. An interesting strong ale almost closer in potency to a barley wine or a dopplebock. Elizavyeta (110), Minnesota, USA Sep 9, 2007 A fantastically dense and sweet pour with a thin head and exciting effervescence. The aroma is reminiscent of Newcastle with a slight nuttiness with a hefty amount of malt.
Flavor is intense with prevailing notes of toffee, whiskey, and a finish of malt with a lingering presence that simply begs for a young, flavorful gouda or medium-bodied washed rind cheese like pont l’eveque or saint nectaire for dessert. fraternie (709), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 9, 2007 Complex aromas of caramel, raisin and floral notes. Full mouthfeel of chocolate raisin, caramel, plantain and vegetable. Complex and full-bodied, medium to long finish. carl4beer (394), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Sep 8, 2007 pour a coppery brown with bubbly off white head. aroma of fig and dates with some sweet caramel. mouthful is light at first with some hints of sweetness and the finish is full of big flavor of dark molasses. as it warms the alcohol note comes alive. nice brew... Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Sep 6, 2007 THOUGHTS: It was almost like a cross betewwn a barley wine and a doubel. Great beer. I wasn’t expecting much the first time I tried this, but it seems even better now with a little aging. This one doesn’t need to be very cold at all. A must try for dark beer lovers.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark brown with red highlights and a small, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was heavy caramel and chocolate syrup along with raisins, brown sugar, dark fruit, bourbon and very light alcohol. The initial flavor was light to moderate sweetness, while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic. The dominant flavors were chocolate syrup and dark fruit. Really malty and not really much hops. The medium body was slightly syrupy with soft carbonation and a lightly alcohlic finish. blank (998), Washington, Washington DC, USA Sep 6, 2007 A really heavly rich dark belgian all. Almost too heavy for me. I liked it alot but it lacked some of the subtlies that I look for in a belgain. talon1117 (615), Bellvue, Colorado, USA Sep 5, 2007 Pours a murky, dark brown color with crimson highlights; head is fairly small, yellowish-beige, and fizzy which is mostly diminishing and leaves no lace. Pretty typical nose but pleasant; dates, maple, brown sugar, light yeast, whisps of alcohol, even a hint at hazelnut. Flavor is fairly consistant with the nose; rich notes of maple, brown sugar, hazelnut, maybe a little chocolate and hints at roast near the finish. Palate is lively, medium, and chewy, but a little syrupy with some warmth. Finish is moderate length with some light bitterness to match the sweetness with maple, light roast notes, and some yeast. Nothing exeptional about this one but solid with plenty of rich notes and nice intriguing complexities to make it interesting. Palate could use some work, but overall, an entertaining beer nonetheless.
