Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Poured from a 25 oz. bottle. Deep dark copper color with a a beige head that quickly disapates. A fruity flavor with a pretty big alcohol aftertaste. I’ve only had one Abby ale before this but this was excellent.

Draught at Hopleaf, Chicago. Deep red/brown murky pour with small beige head. Boozy aroma. Tastes sweet, dark fruit, caramel, rich tasting Belgian clone. Nice.

!2 oz bottle, pours wonderful copper color, abit carbonated, but the head is gone in a few seconds. Abit nutty, fruity, some sweetness, malt, abit alcoholic, good brew, but seems like a cross between a belgian, and a bock. good.

Bruegala 2009 sampling - Poured a clear dark, red-brown color with a sparse head. Aroma had notes of molasses, caramel, chocolate, toffee, light lemon citrus note, average yeasty and an average amount of grape, apple and brown sugar notes. Flavor was very sweet with a plum and brown sugar presence with a light dryness to it. A very full body with a very lively carbonation and a light alcohol note. Overall a really smooth brew with a lot of character and pretty damn good.

One of my favorites. Roasted nuts, caramel, slight citrus and hops. Very nice. Two dollars from each bottle goes to the Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute.

Amber-brown color, nicely cloudy, -attractive beer. Pours a small light brown head. Strong malt with port aroma as well as hints of burnt toffee. Flavor mirrors aroma, but less sweet. Lightly fizzy which diminishes the palate, but doesn’t overwhelm the flavor. Not really like Belgian Abbey style ales, but well worth drinking.
