COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a shaker at Plush with dinner. Absolutely love the name and artwork. It poured a cloudy deep brown color with creamy, long-lasting beige foam, nice spritzy little bubbles and lace. Very pretty and aromatic. True-to-style Belgian Dubbel aromas and flavors, very toffee-like, smooth, some alcoholic warmth. Tasty, authentic, better than some.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Dark and slightly ruby amber colour with a beige and short foamy head. Dark and leathery, mildly roasted malty aroma with notes of caramel, candy, dried fruits and shades of alcohol. Moderately sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Robust dark and slightly roasty malty base with notes of caramel, fruit punch, spices and dark chocolate; moderately sweet and roasty malty finish with notes of dried fruits, dark chocolate and spices. Complex and flavourful. 04.V.15

Bottle from gbbf 2015 and drunk at home. Ester aroma dark brown malts some raisin. It’s a quad I guess. Up against the best of the Belgians it holds up pretty well a touch boozy . Decent dark fruits some sour dark cherry even. Dates and prunes. It’s decent .

This is a once-in-a-while treat that has a great amount of flavor. Pair with burgers, fish and chips or brunch.

Bottle bought at GBBF 2015, drunk at home out of an Orval glass. Pours cola looking brown, clear, off white head which dissipates to nothing quickly. Aroma is pretty stunning. Big floral, fruity Belgian yeast, prune, raisin, plum, caramel, candy sugar, slight herbal. Taste, is tangy slightly bitter earthy hop, caramel, prune, raisin, fig and dark dried fruit, candy sugar. I often like American versions of Belgian beers, because of the clean lines. They are always big, very well thought out, perfectly brewed, sometimes lacking the blurred funky bombastic edges of Belgian beers, but you can pick out each flavour exactly. It’s all perfectly showcased. On the finish there’s some really tangy earthy slightly bitter hop.

A sweet malt aroma with an underlying order I couldn’t place. Reddish brown color with a short lasting head. A very pleasant taste of sweet malt, pepper and fruit. Medium body with a slightly sweet metalic.

Pour rich brown with caramel lacing. Aroma is raisins, prunes and cloves. Taste is sweet as most Belgians. It’s a great drinking beer.

Mahogany in color with an off white head. Aroma strong in raisin, ripe plum a hint of cinnamon toast. Tastes exactly as I thought it would, more dark fruit, perhaps notes of caramel. But the finish was like a flat cola...a bit lingering with the alcohol too. Just never could get it together.
