COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

pours a dark, mostly opaque with small head. smells malty, sweet, molasses with some light cherry notes. Tastes medium sweet with a heavy body. nice after tastes of malt and some fruits. really good beer, great abbey ale

Dark ruby colour, beige head. Aroma of candy sugar, dark fruits, red berries and toasted malts. Taste is medium sweet, fruity flavour. Light to medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.

It’s been a while since I had it, but I clearly remember a think, rich mouthfeel and a full flavor. I’m not going to be much of a help as far as critiquing it, but I would recommend it whole-heartedly.

No date. Bottle. Deep dark ruby red, with a brownish hue. Filtered, clear. Pours like a flat soda, dissipates to nothing. Clean, strong fruity esters of green apples, pears. Light, mlid syrup, moderately low soy sauce (umami), a bit distracting, heavy crystal/specialty malts. Could use more attenuation and carbonation. Flavors are all there.

Corked bomber poured into a Westvleteren snifter. This beer is not that beer, to be sure, although perhaps strives to be, but it’s good nonetheless – and a whole lot less expensive! This beer pours a gorgeous ruby mahogany; hold it up to light and relish its color. Short tan head evaporates rapidly with no Belgian lacing. Aroma is of dried fruit (figs, raisins, plums, cherries) with a faint farmhouse scent. Flavor is a spicy sweetness, although not cloyingly so. In this medium-bodied brew, I taste chocolate-covered cherries, plums and raisins intermingling with a yeastiness, followed by a slight prickly bitterness on the tongue from the hops. Leaves a dryness on the tongue – thus making you want another sip, which is obviously not a punishment!

Bottle (750 ml). Ruby-brown color with light tan head and lacing. Raisin and cherry aroma with some subtle raspberry notes. Tap at the junkyard. Aroma of rich toffee and dark fruits. Pours amber to chestnut, no head. Tastes of dates, damsons and blackberries with solid biscuity backbone and resinous finish. 9.4% so a third will do.

Several bottles at Peter’s over New Year’s. Nice dark red body with big head. Nose is malty, sweet. Taste is dark fruits, malts, toasty and spicy. Lots going on. Really good kick. Plenty enjoyable.

Aromat: kwaskowy, lekko słodki, słodowy (karmel, melano, chleb, tosty, może lekka czekolada), wiśnie, suszone śliwki, rodzynki, goździki, pieprz oraz spora doza alkoholu. Bardzo intensywny., ale sprawia wrażenie nie do końca świeżego i to nie w sensie utlenienia tylko kwaskowości.

Wygląd: barwa ciemno czerwona, względnie klarowna. Piana jasno beżowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, dość obfita, ale umiarkowanie trwała. Redukuje się do niewielkiego kożuszka i obwódki wokół ścianek.

Smak: słodko- kwaskowa podstawa i wyraźnie owocowe (nieco winne) nuty owocowe, alkoholowe. Następnie słody karmelowe, ciastkowe, tostowe, melano. Trochę brak mi tu czekolady. Goryczka w stylu belgijskim, lekko zaznaczona, adekwatna, ale znowu w głowie siedzi mi tu kwaskowośc i spory alkohol. Krągła pełnia, umiarkowane do niskiego wysycenie i kwaskowo- alkoholowy finisz. A narzekałem na swojego belga, leżakowanego przez dwa miesiące w płatkach dębowych.

Butelka, warka z 06.02.2015. Bardzo ladne piwo - gleboko bursztynowe z rubinowymi poblyskami, wysoka, kremowa piana, bardzo powoli opadajaca i bardzo ladnie zostajaca na szkle. Aromaty najpierw bardzo mocno slodowe, chlebowe, moze nieco ciasta - w slodka strone. Do tego dochodza dosc intensywne owoce i swieze i suszone sliwki, rodzynki, wisnie. W tle troche nutek opiekanych, ziemisto-karmelowych, melasowych (to ostatnie po ogrzaniu sie piwa staje sie intensywniejsze). Aromat wyczuwalny z pol metra. W smaku wszystko zgodnie z aromatem, czyli jest ewidentnie slodko, czuc zarowno owocowa jak i slodowa strone tego piwa. Chmiele... jakie chmiele? ;) No dobra, po ogrzaniu pojawia sie lekka ziolowosc zmieszana z przyprawowoscia, ale faktycznie lekka i pojecia nie mam, czy na ile to chmielowe aromaty... praktycznie nie ma goryczki - jej role przejmuje alkohol, ktory niewatpliwie jest obecny - na tyle, ze z jednej strony rownowazy to piwo (mimo, ze tez jest slodki, a la porto) a z drugiej sklania do zastanowienia, jakie byloby za poltora roku czy dwa lata :) Calosciowo - trudno to piwo nazwac wywazonym czy zrownowazonym, niemniej strona w ktora szala sie przechyla bardzo mi odpowiada. Ciezkie, nieco lepkie, tresciwe, syropowe, dosc wysoko wysycone co2... Hamerykanie daja rade :) klasa piwo, degustacyjne, do saczenia.

A beautiful red/orange/yellow color and thin double layer of off-white head. Sweet balanced aroma, wheat, grass, floral, strawberries, cherries, banana. Flavor is bursting with a punch of fresh fruit, floral malt, grass, clove and yeast. Fantastic.
