Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

!2 oz bottle, pours wonderful copper color, abit carbonated, but the head is gone in a few seconds. Abit nutty, fruity, some sweetness, malt, abit alcoholic, good brew, but seems like a cross between a belgian, and a bock. good.

355 mL bottle. (Great label ! )Lovely ruby-brown with a small but sticky beige head. Full aroma of nuts, raisins, cherries, alcohol, and a little chocolate. Flavour is fairly complex as well, with caramel, candied fruit, brown sugar, and prunes. Very chocolatey at the end. Sounds sweet, and it is, but not cloyingly so. Slightly boozy finish. Very creamy, without being heavy. Great beer! Would probably be even better bottle-conditioned.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. There was just a little head that went away rather quickly, and when tasted, it seemed like it had a bit of prune flavor - maybe raisins. The finish left the feel of alcohol on the back of my mouth. I enjoyed this one.

750ml bottle - pours with small amount of creamy white head. Aroma hint with moderate sweetness and a good mixture of caramel and fruitiness - taste verifys this with a light heavy sweetness and delicious syrup flavor, with the fruitiness to end. Very nice and smooth throughout.

Hazy ruby with very little head. Aroma- peach, pear, caramel, cherry, mild alcohol. Taste- toffee sweetness, berry tart, some bitter finish. Juicy sweet texture with noticeable alcohol in the nose. Medium body, mild soft carbonation.

750mL bottle: appearance is rootbeer brown with minimal tan head, aroma is spicy with some candi sugar and a bit yeasty, flavor slightly sour and pretty yeasty, hints of candi sugar and a bit too over carbonated. One of the best interpretations non-Belgian, Belgian strong ales I have had but still doesn’t isn’t as good as the real thing.

From a 12 oz bottle. Pour was amber with very little head. The taste was of caramel and fruits. The yeast stood out and really covered up the high ABV.

Fourth sample in a North Coast beer dinner at Teller’s. Pours a cloudy, dark, red-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, roasted malt, nuts, plum, fig, and yeast. Flavor leaned mostly toward the caramel and dark fruits, with a nice maltiness, and notes of brown sugar, nuts, and roast. The alcohol is well-hidden and emerges when warm. Full-bodied, with good carbonation. Smooth, just like the namesake. Nice brew.

Thoroughly enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a nice deep amber color to medium brown, with a lightish tan head that is moderate in size. Carbonation level is perhaps 2.5 atmospheric volumes. Strong and pleasing notes of caramel, toffee, raison, and prunes in the nose. The palate is also extremely pleasing, with a lot of the aforementioned flavors, along with some notes of brown sugar, abbey yeast esters that are pleasantly subtle, and a slight alcoholic character that adds additional complexity. Overall, excellent.
