COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Caramelized malts, raisins, other dark fruits, and booze in the aroma--like a rum-soaked fruit cake. Reddish dark brown in appearance with a thin, mocha-colored head that disappears quickly. The mouthfeel is medium to full, with subtle carbonation and a creamy body. The taste is dark malts, fruits, and caramel, with banana on the back of the tongue. Very good, but the aroma is much better than the taste.

Bottle - Abbey style beer with an ok mix of hops and malt, definitely more sweetness than hops to this beer. A hint of spice on the pallet. Not a fan of this style of beer and this beer hasn’t changed that opinion.

Bottle at home, crazy that I haven’t rated this yet. Pours a hazy dark reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit, figs, raisins, some bitterness to the finish, alcohol shows somewhat, warming, smooth, decent readily available stuff.

A fruity aroma with scents of raisins being most dominant. All sweetness for the taste and a body that is surprisingly light on its feet. Really delightful. Enjoyed on tap at Sugar Maple, MKE, WI.

A nice beer from my hometown fort Bragg, CA. I love Abby style ales and this doesn't disappoint. A medium red amber pour with a nice head. Tastes very much like chamey red frankly. Which I think is a big compliment. It is malty and clean without being too figgy. I like the full body of the palette without being overwhelming. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz. bottle. Pours a ruby red when held up to the light with a brief off-white head. Aroma has a lot going on: sweetness, raisins, spices, malt, alcohol. Taste is sweet up front with some raisins most notable. Coffee bitterness taste after the swallow. Medium body. Sweet finish. Slightly warming alcohol. Pretty good.

750ml bottle to Trappistes Rochefort chalice, beer pours a transparent dark reddy-brown/black with a off white chunky head. It fizzles away leaving nothing behind. Aroma is faint but complex and carries dark sugar, liquor, chocolate, caramel, spices, plum, grapes and dried fruit...fairly good but subdued. Taste is sweet with a slight sour linger and bitter finish however it is lacking in depth and complexity typically found in most examples. Palate is thin bodied, co2 needs to be higher, but oddly enough the beer is quite refreshing though the alcohol does creep in. Overall, not a bad beer and a good attempt. This one strikes me as interesting for one reason: it lacks complexity and robustness that most Belgian examples have which is one problem I’ve been having with my own homebrews! Odd....

Deep amber, tan head disappears. Nose is leather and dried dark fruit. Sweet. Middle pops cherries and caramelized grain. Finish is yeasty, sweet, and fairly long. Delicious.

Woohoo, just found the notes on this. I poured this into a chalice. The appearance was a nice golden orange to brown color with a nice one finger white foamy head that died at a decent pace and ended up leaving a decent sticky lacing in rings. The smell was a nice sweet yet an inviting somewhat Belgian spiciness of sorts invading my nose. The taste is sweet and spicy with an inviting yeasty breadiness surrounding the flavors. There is a nice sweet yeasty aftertaste with an iviting dry spicy sweet finish. On the palate, this one delicately sits about a medium and has a decent carbonation running about my mouth and tongue to tell me there’s a decent sessionability about it. Overall, I say this is a nice Belgian Strong Pale Ale as everything fits nicely for this beer.
