COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

deep mahogany pour with a thin beige head... amazing aroma of dark candy, prune, dates, jamaican rum cake... very sweet up front but unfortunately a bit sour and alcoholic on the finish

Aroma is dry. Grape cherry cranberry. Shouted holy shit as I poured this beer. Cabernet color. Dark dark ruby. Thick. Tan bubbles contrast. Epic. Taste is.... Not As subtle as other Belgians. Lots of hops. Rose note. Maybe like lavender.. Fruit notes are subtle in the taste. Palate is heavy and dry. Really this beer lacks where it counts most: in the taste. Hops are a little over powering which the dry palate exacerbates. Very very wine like.

"solid abbey ale, slightly thick and robust, full of spicy character in the nose and taste. mouthfeel is ok...a little tightly carbonated, but the flavor makes up for that."

Enjoyed from bombers and 12oz bottles. Shiny brown. Nice example of a Belgian strong ale that is not too strong and nothing outstanding or complex but is pretty good.

12 oz bottle. Deep ruby, little gray head. Aroma is grass, fig, honey and mustard. Flavor is essentially a mass produced Belgian ale. Nothing spectacular when up against Belgians, but impressive as an American ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 2-2-14- Poured from bottle into a chalice glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep mahogany color with a ruby red shine and a two finger head of a thick cream colored foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading to leave a decent level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of darker dried fruit smells composed of raisin, fig, and prune. Along with these smells are some candied aromas and a good level of banana and bubblegum. Some brown sugar and light cherry are there as well and mix with a bit of yeast and clove to produce a nice sweet Belgian strong dark smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet darker fruit flavor of raisin, fig, and cherry along with some flavors of bubblegum. A bit of a lightly roasted bready flavor is also present upfront with it getting slightly stronger as the flavor advances to the end. A yeasty taste develops right after the initial taste, with it gaining intensity toward the end, only to fade again. Around the middle of the flavor profile some clove and cardamom spice as well as some banana come to the tongue. Around this time the taste of the beer sours a bit with it taking on flavors of some tart cherry. Some of the sweetness fades at the end with a bit of an alcohol flavor coming to the tongue. This with a little bit of a grassy taste and more spice, end up leaving one with a somewhat unbalanced, slightly drier, bready and fruit flavor to linger on the tongue Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side with a carbonation that is average as well. The combination of a medium body and carbonation are rather appropriate for the dark fruit, bready and spice/yeast flavors of the brew. Overall – A decent but nothing too exceptional Belgian strong dark ale. Worth a try, but one I wouldn’t take over most other Belgian strong darks that are readily available.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Best before: 31-8-2015. Poured into trappist glass. Chestnut body. Some red colour to it. Below average amount of light brown head. Nose includes lots of ripe, red fruit. Hint of apple as well. Medium body. A little bit of an oily mouth feel. Medium to low carbonation. Mostly sweet, but also with some bitterness and a hint of sour taste. Raisin, some, for me, indistinguishable red fruit, very ripe cherry - the ones with absolutely no sourness in them - toffee, some cola and caramel flavour. Also a tiny hint of apple and pear - just enough to make it interesting, this beer doesn’t at all feel sour to the borderline of infected. All in all a very good beer. Complex.

Dark brown pour with tan head. Very drinkable for the ABV. A little malty with a slight sour finish. Really enjoy this beer.

From bottle. Pours a clear brown with an off-white head. A dark fruits aroma is strong and beautiful. Taste is dark fruits and Belgian yeasts. Delicious.

God och rund. Något för söt för min smak. Men absolut en ok öl. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
