With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2012 I think I’m in the my minority but I didn’t really care for this one despite my relatively high rating. A beautiful dark amber color pour and I was hoping for the best... The intial taste was above average but I really did not care for the kind of sour/yeasty after taste. Reminded me a little of an IPA which I’m not fond of and probably won’t turn down but won’t seek out. OK>>>I rerated this...much better than I rated earlier. I’ve tried it twice since my first pour and i have admit I was wrong...really, really good brew!

12 oz bottle. Poured a brown color with a nice frothy tan head. Taste of caramel malts, dried fruit, fig with a sweet finish. Well carbonated, medium-full bodied. All hail Brother Thelonious

Lots of malt in the nose, toffee, dark fruits. Dark brown pour with thin foam. Medium / heavy body, light fizz and slick on the tongue. There is some yeasty crispness in the middle, but it is dominated by the sweetness. Strong alcohol burn at the end reminds you that it’s 9%.

355ml bottle served in a Rochefort Trappist glass. A: Pours a clear very dark amber to brown color forming a small and very creamy head with medium retention and tons of spotty and creamy lacings left in the glass. S: Sweet nose. Strong notes of dark dry fruits, caramel and nuts. Earth, spices and brown bread. Hints of grassy hops. T: Sweet upfront. Strong notes of dark dri fruits (raisins and plums), banana cake, dry figs, candi sugar, toffee, caramel malts and nuts. Roasted malts. Finish is bitter. Great bittersweet balance. M: Full body. Medium carbonation. Very fruity aftertaste. Lots of raisins and caramel. Persistent bitterness. O: Great drinkability. Great Belgian style Ale made in USA. Great tribute to Mr. Thelonious.

Miam !

Poured a 2013 12 oz bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a cloudy reddish brown with a medium golden amber 1 finger head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma is that of bananas. Palate is a medium mouth feel with perfect carbonation for this style. Overall it feels great going down and was good either sipped or chugged :) Taste is far superior having aged 3 years from when it was fresh. i paired this with a salad that had a sweet dressing and this paired very well. Taste is of dark fruits, bananas and a nice level of booze. Overall, this is an excellent beer to let sit for three years. Glad I opened this today. If you have a 2013 I suggest you pour it today, because you wont be disappointed. Cheers!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a a tulip glass. The head is thin and off white. The appearance is dark brown with a ruby hue. The aroma is yeast, clove, banana, some fig and toasted malt. On the tasting I get raisin and caramel. The mouthfeel is a bit syrupy and oily. The 9.4% abv is covered deftly.

Pours an amber-brown with a big, rich, long-lasting light khaki head. Brown sugar and custard nose. Metallic flavor is, unfortunately prominent. Brown sugar, custard, and ripe red fruit flavor. Full, soft mouthfeel with a bit of alcohol heat.

Pours a dark hazy brown with a mild off white head. One of my favorites, but not quite as great as I remembered. Leads with a strong caramel malt, but finishes a little too sweet. Carbonation is just right. You can taste the high abv, not as bad as it could be though. Overall great beer
