Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottle. Poured a clear ruddy dark brown color. The head was tan with an orange tint. Smelled of raisin, molasses, toffee, subdued chocolate, and a splash of alcohol. Medium bodied and spicy on the tongue with mild to moderate carbonation. Raisin, fig, spice, and chocolate flavors.

Bottle on 8/26/06 purchased at Bev Mo in Mission Valley San Diego. Pours a rich deep dark slightly cloudy amber. With a large head that dissipates to a thin layer. The aroma is sweet and malty. The taste is also sweet and very tasty, with hints of fruit and a lingering sweetness in the aftertaste. As a fan of Monk and North Coast I’m happy to rate this wonderful Belgian styled ale as delicious.

This is a nice brew folks. Nice crystal clear brown color with a decent sized head. Dried fruits on the nose and tongue. Good malt and a bit of hops to balance it well. I like this beer.

12oz bottle. 4-pack purchased in Calgary. Very dark reddish brown with a good yellow tinged head. Keep the liquid swirling in the glass for a steady aroma stream. Alcohol, malt, spices and a hint of molasses. Lively thick mouth feel. I find it tasty, interesting and drinkable. Restrained alcohol. Dark malt and soft spice. A hint of sourness or acid in the finish that is intriguing.

On tap at the SF Rogue Public House. Pours a dark amber with a thick yellow head. No aroma that I can identify. This is a thick beer. Has a huge smoke flavor at first- very peaty. Amazing smoke flavor with a quick finish. This seems like it is huge in alcohol, even for 9%!

Small light beige head. Deep ruby red body. Deep sweet malty aroma with peppery spicy notes. Intense sweet earhy licorice and malt taste with banana, fruit, spice, and pepper notes. Sharpish mouthfeel. Alcoholic notes. The alcohol heat is hidden a bit by the carbonation. Dry roaste licorice aftertaste. Very nice! (0.75l bottle from gr0ve.)
