Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Labeled 9.4% abv. Aroma is pleasant with a light toasted sensation and moderate piney hops. There was also pear, nutmeg and cinnamon in the aroma. Appearance was nice. Average sized frothy off-white head that played the disappearing act. Color was a very dark amber or brown. The flavor was a bit of a disappointment, salty and sour at first followed by a very strong copper aftertaste. Good attempt at a Belgian strong, but I know that North Coast can do better. According to my dad this is a very good attempt at a common Belgian street ale. I have another bottle that I am going to age for a while.

Bottle. Rucy-mahogony beer with a light beige head. Sweet malt, spice and plum aroma. Rich malt, stone fruit (plum/cherry) and yeasty flavor. Alcohol slightly warming, but very drinkable. Flavor is great but the finish is slightly lacking. Still - very good.

This is a decent beer but there are a lot that are better for the same price. Well carbonated. Amber colored, and there is a thin layer of foam on top of the beer in my Trappist glass. Lots of malt here. There is the standard fruit aroma, but nothing remarkable about it; lots of sweet malt in the aroma as well. Flavor is malt; there is some sugar and a little fruit, but also chalky dryness.

BCTC 06 Pours a clear brown color with a thin offwhite head. Decent aroma of malt and candied fruits, there’s some yeast too but it’s subtle. Flavor of dark malt and candied fruits. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and soft carbonation. I’m not too jazzed about this beer.

Sample at Bodega. This brew is a deep reddish-amber color with a medium thin and creamy light tan head that dissipates steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of berries, yeast and sweet malt. Medium body with flavors of yeast, candi sugar, malt and fruit. Notes of alcohol as well. The finish is ripe fruit and sweet malt with a plum and yeast aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle: Rusty amber, moderate off-white head, foamy, decent lacing.   Rich smoked malt aroma.   It doesn’t come across as a smoked beer, but there is a huge smoked/campfire like tinge.   Dark pitted fruit takes a back seat in this one.   Biting smokiness and almost uber band-aid.   I waS sooo looking forward to this one but its proven to be difficult to swallow.   There is also a slight cheese funk to it.   No real sweet dark pitted fruit in this one.   I can honestly say this is one of the first times I am unable to finish a 750ml.   Damnit!

Clear redish-brown body with a small off white head. Aroma is a mix bag of ripe fruits. Thin body with sticky malt caramel holds together various fruit flavours (plums, oranges) and even some vegetables followed by some astringency. Thelonious not Delicious.
