With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Dark amber color to mahogany. Aroma of malt and the esthers; ripe plums, maybe apricots. Good malt flavor, dry, but the body could be stronger, at the end it’s quite thin; flavors of caramel and sweet liquorice; good bitterness level. Not impressive, but professionally brewed anyway.

Bottle, 12oz. It pours a lovely, ruby brown body, looking clear, and topped by a creamy, finger-thick beige head that lasts. Dried fruits, salty licorice, brown sugar, some alcohol and a spicy hop note. Full-bodied, slighlty warming and quite fizzy in the mouth. There’s dried fruits, some fresh fruits, blue plums mostly, sugars, a little spicy touch, a fine bitterness and alcohol in the flavor. The finish is lasting, with a slight alcohol burn, dried fruits, sugars and a herbal bitterness. Some caramel and a little bready touch blends in all the way. A nice one, but not in the league of the best Belgians. Will certainly have more of this one though. (090419)

35,5cl bottle. Thanks to Baggio. Pours deep amber reddish with a creamy lasting head and lacings. Nose is sweet of yeast, berries and red wine. Smooth and full bodied. Taste is sweet with a slight sour and vinous note. Lots of dark dried fruits such as plum, raisin and a little caramel and bubblegum. A vinous and warm sipper. Some syrup and sugar as it warms up. Very nice. Nearly quadruple style.

Bottle, 9.4%. Sweet aroma, hint of vanilla. Sweet flavour, some alcohol and some brown sugar. A bit too sweet for me and not quite balanced by the alcohol. Sweet apricot.

Tap at Blind Tiger. An interesting beer. As a Belgian strong ale, I was ready for the funky yeast character but the rich, malty sweetness caught me off guard, much like the improvised solos of the eponymous Jazz maestro might. Aroma is heavy and funky yeast, with hints of sweet, dark fruits. The flavor follows the funk initially, then gives way to a rich, malty backbone. A lot of brown sugar by my palette. A truly unique beer I would say.

Dark ruby color, big cloudy brown head, lace. Raisins, menthol and yeast, quite Belgian, some roasted notes too. Raisins, plums, sweetish with some yeasty notes. Sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden. Fruity, tasty, not the world class, but good brew..

Draught, Fred’s Rivertown Alehouse, Snohomish, WA
Burgundy colour. Chocolatey, raisiny aroma. Sweet flavour with slight toffee character. Brown sugar finish. Far too sweet and tastes filtered...has a slick body rather than a full one and lacks complexity.
