Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Burgundy colour. Chocolatey, raisiny aroma. Sweet flavour with slight toffee character. Brown sugar finish. Far too sweet and tastes filtered...has a slick body rather than a full one and lacks complexity.

Corked Bottle
Dark amber color to mahogany. Aroma of malt and the esthers; ripe plums, maybe apricots. Good malt flavor, dry, but the body could be stronger, at the end it’s quite thin; flavors of caramel and sweet liquorice; good bitterness level. Not impressive, but professionally brewed anyway.

(750ml bottle) Minimal beige head that vanishes quickly, atop clear ruby body. Aroma is medium sweet, plum, some perfume, alcohol astringency. Taste is moderately sweet, plum, light caramel, vinous, some alcohol. Soft, medium-full body, some stickiness.

Bottled 750ml
Dark ruby color, big cloudy brown head, lace. Raisins, menthol and yeast, quite Belgian, some roasted notes too. Raisins, plums, sweetish with some yeasty notes. Sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden. Fruity, tasty, not the world class, but good brew..

Botella. Unclear deep red-brown colour. Aroma of spices, alcohol and dark malts. Quite good a mouthfeel. Sweet flavour of weel toasted malt with spices, caramel and pleasant bitter hops. Goes great while playing Nothingface.
