Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

I remember this one being pretty strong for what it’s worth... Not sure what else there was beyond the alcohol taste.

Bottle 0,33l. Dark ruby colored. A large creamy tanned head. Strong aroma of fruit: Plums dominating. Inviting. Sweet fruity flavor evoving into a sweet bitter aftertaste. Dry fruity bitter finish. Alcohol shines through with it’s warming effect. KI=7

Pours a very dark brown color with a thin, sparse head. Smell is nutty, spicy, and sweet. Nice feel to it and the taste is warm, slightly raisiny, slightly sweet, and has a nice dry finish to it. Very nice and gets better as it warms up a little.

Draught at Eni-bru in Osaka. Raisins, dried fruits, sherry, big caramel, and alcohol. Sweet and gets a bit too cloying through the class, probably better ages in the big bottle. Still quite impressive.

750 ml bottle purchased at Spirit’s Burlington. Pours a murky deep chestnut brown with an average size foamy light beige head. Wow what an aroma, is this bourbon barrel aged?? Strong complex with notes of vanilla, raisin, fig, prune, bourbon, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, yeast, just comlex and great all around. Medium bodied yet with a flat mouthfeel almost as if there was not much carbonation despite the head that I observed on the original pour. Flavor isn’t quite as complex as the great aroma but still pleasant. Flavors of dark fruits(figs, plum, raisin), brown bread, yeast, brown sugar and some candy notes(toffee and caramel) come through. This is one solid beer that I would gladly have again and again.

Dark reddish brown brew with a nice tan head. Nose is sweet dark fruit, malt, must, and raisin. This beer has a vinous quality to it. It offers flavors of sugar, alcohol, dark fruit, must (again), and a sophisticated Old World feel. It is just a bit over sweet but is still quite tasty.

Draft pint at the sunset grill 8/5/06. Pourw a flat dark brown color with a dull surface. Nose is dark fruits with some grape skin and some dates and chocolate. Palate is smooth but dull and lightly oily. Flavor is more of the dark fruits and hints of chocolate and dates. Light grape skin notes and a finish of oily chewyness.

Brown color and hazy with a good head. Aroma is sweet and fruity. Flavors are fruity and sweet with malt. Apples and banana flavors add nicely.
