Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

750ml bottle: First off, I love the name. It is a great play on words. This one pours an opaque reddish-brown color. Mine had a large, fizzy tan head on it that went away almost immediately. It has a very nice aroma. Somewhat candy sweetness, along with cherries, plums and yeast. A touch of effervescence on the tongue. The taste is quite good also. The taste is good. Somewhat sweet, caramel, raisins and dark cherries to the taste. Finishes a bit lighter than expected. I would definitely buy another.

Alcohol abounds. Little other than the usual suspects arise. To become jaded with a style has great drawbacks and being presented with a cool bottle festooned with the likeness of a jazz great, then not to care al too much for it is a shame. I like North Coast and feel they could have done this one justice. It’s not a complete failure. It’s not BAD, I just don’t care that much for a beer screamiomg alcohol and sweetness. Tone it down or amp it in a different direction. Monk was a powerful player but he didn’t hit me over the head.

12oz bottle with cap, no cork. Pour mahongany brown with some ruby highlights. Very thin that disappeared quickly. Aroma was malt, sweet fruit and alcohol. Flavour with very nice with more candied fruit, some chocolate and warming alcohol. Very easy drinking Belgian Ale. well done.

Clear amber/red and very still looking. Tart aroma with melanoidian malt, cherry and some burnt and chocolate notes. Rather sour, a little earthy, somewhat chalky, with some astringency. Not rich enough in body for my tastes. I hope I got a bottle that is bad because I don’t particularly like this one.

As a huge Jazz and Monk fan, I was very anxious to get my hands on a bottle of this. Just like the great composer himself, this beer is full of personality and character. Poured from the bottle into a trappist glass... it had an almost opaque, dark ruby, red hue with a beige head. Faint aromas of malt and brown sugar. Sharp palate with a lot of carbonation with flavors of toasted malt, sour fruit and other sweet flavors. Slight chalky, metallic aftertaste with a presence of alcohol. I love this beer, one of the best American micro Belgian beers that I have had.

Pours amber/copper, with a tan head. Aromas are fruit, malt, brown sugar, and nuts. Flavors are sweet malt, fruit, brown sugar, nuts, and spices. Medium body and not too much carbonation. Should age well.
