Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

750ml. corked bottle at the NYRBG. Light brown color with a small tan head. Sweet, spicy aroma with lots of baking spices(cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander) and some bready yeastiness. Sweet malty flavor with lots of the aforementioned baking spices and some dark dried fruits. A bit over the top and quite sweet. Hopefully it will mellow a bit as it ages.

Bottle from the Blue Max. Pours mostly clear amber color with a 1/2 inch of head. Nothing special considering this is anmed after on of the greatest musicians of all time. Sure, yeah some spices are present along with some very ripe fruits but in the style.. this was a sour note.

ok, some walnut, banana, oats, chocolate, maple, and brown sugar. very tastey, very creamy mouthfeel. i would’ve expected a bit more funk with a name like brother thelonius and the jazz reference and whatnot, but meh. classy though, classy strong ale. would’ve called it a quad if i knew better...

Fresh 12 oz bottle.

Pours brown with red highlights, completely clear. Filtered? Good-sized foamy head. Sweet prune and molassas, belgian yeast and overripe banana in the aroma. The flavor is certainly on the sweet side, medicinal like herbal honey cough drops. Spicy, dry close. Larger, coarser carbonation in the mouthfeel.

This is relatively authentic in flavor and aroma, but I’m left underwhelmed. There’s a lot going on here, but no depth. The flavors don’t meld (yes, it’s young; I’ll try the older one some time) and they don’t harmonize. I’m sure mood plays a part in it, but I didn’t finish the 12oz glass and instead turned to single malt to finish off the night.

Dark brown and garnet color. Thin, but creamy tan head with good lacing. Dark fruit nose with lots of caramel and some cherry notes. Medium bodied with sweet caramel malts and ripe prunes. Biscuit and dough-like flavors underneath. Smooth finish.

Bottle. Poured brown with a creamy tan head. Sweet aroma of fruits, malt, and a hint of spice. The flavor follows the same but also has some wood character also. Medium body, sweet, smooth, and warming.

I saw Thelonius monk on a bottle and i knew this was a beer worth picking up for sure since i admire the mans music. Color is a tea like brown with red tint. The nose is mild with light aroma of caramel malt and weak yeast. Flavor is strong with spice and malt and a yeast that reminds me i’m not drinking an authentic Belgian strong. Still a decent ale though and besides i prefer the darker Belgian ales even if they are imitated here in the states.
