Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Growler from the Drafting room Exton. Dark brown in color with slight red hue. Smells of dry fruits. Cherry, plum, raisin, and brown sugar make up the flavor. very sweet. Rich full body and mouthful gives way to mild alcohol burn. Alcohol becomes more pronounced as it warms.

Dark caramel in color. No lacing and little head. Aromas of dry wheat, caramel, and plum fruit. Flavors develop the fruit a bit more, with a sour cherry, plum, prune flavor. Yeast presence is lacing, and the palate is not as deep or as developed as other belgian strongs. This beer hides its alcohol well, though. Tasty and fruit-forward.

Pours a rich dark amber to ruby with a thin offwhite film of a head. The nose is rich and malty with nice caramel hints. Alcohol, dark fruits, creamy with a little acidity. Well balanced and subtle, while definitely rich. Creamy and viscous mouthfeel, but perhaps a bit too creamy. Big big malt. Rich caramel, raisin, and some significant diacetyl. Some herbal hops. Alcohol is very noticeable. Some acidity. A little less astringency and diacetyl and this would be a really very nice brew, oh well, it’s merely rather good. Creamy rich finish, acidic fruit and some toast in the finish.

12 ounce bottle in Westmalle chalice. Reddish brown with lasting ring and a little lace. Toasted caramel almond and chocolate covered cherry aroma with slight alcohol burn. Very toasted brown sugar caramel with mild red fruit and underlying bittersweetness. Very sweet. Mild spicy finish. Fairly complex with all its toasty sweetness. Medium-full body and medium carbo gives a little bite. Pretty good. Maybe a little too bitey.

Pours clear alcoholy, clear bronze with no head and no lacing. Rich, dark sugar sweet aroma. Heavy malt and sark sugar flavor. Heavy, thick, light syrupy mouthfeel. Winey, heavy alcohol finish. Not the best for continual enjoyment.

Pours a deep brown with a very quickly dissipating head. Aroma is spicy; cinnamon, anise, vanilla, quite sweet smelling, caramel and chocolate with a touch of banana. Body is med. and sweet with ls CO2 than I would expect. The flavor is enjoyable but singular. Caramel and belgian esters; mainly banana. The finish, while fairly dry is overpowered by a lingering sweetness. They do a good job of hiding the alohl but man this is sweet and it does lak the complexity of the great Belgians.
