COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Dark caramel color with a small white cola head. Smell very nice with all kinds of fruit and malts rising from the head. Flavor was semi sweet with hints of raisins and fruit. Nice mouth feel with a good lingering follow through. One I will repeat in the future.

Smells malty with a little fruit hint. Dark, dark brown color. Darker than I expected for a Belgian. Tastes like figs and malt with a kinda nutty/dry aftertaste. Has a wine feel to it.. It’s not as good as I expected to tell the truth, though it is a very good beer. I would want this with salad or some sort of greens. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good. Just not for me.

8/V/13 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from Canal’s Liquors (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) @ home - BB: no clue - 2011 vintage (2013-446)

Note: recently I thought I had drunk the last bottle we brought from our honeymoon, but it was not . THIS was. And it was delicious. Shared with my lovely wife, of course.

Little cloudy red brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of sweet malts, caramel, dried fruits, mocha, some chocolate, forest fruits, black berries, dark cherries. Aftertaste: slightly sour touch, dried fruits, cherry jam, bit of alcohol, little bitter, raisins. Very nice beer.

This is a good beer and quantity, very full flavor with good hops balance. Evident bitterness in true aged Belgian fashion, but it is not too bitter to enjoy, sweet smooth tones still prevail. Has a bit of a harder taste than something like a 90 minute IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A - Dark brown with ruby highlights. A 1 finger tan head that dissipates into ceiling of micro-bubbles that holds together very well. S - Figs, red delicious apples, currant, vanilla cream, pouched big leaf tobacco, blue/purple grapes, caramel, bready malt, vinous breaths of alcohol. T - A good dose of fruity malt, hints of bitter cocoa, brown sugar syrup, banana esters, some spice( allspice?) and hops, along with a tiny bit of vanilla on the finish. M - Full, low carbonation, a bit cloying, high ABV for the style. This blurs the lines between a Dubbel and a BSDA. I was reviewing it as a Dubbel at first but I don’t know. Great aromas when allowed to warm up and gets high points for the appearance. The spice was hard to detect. Still don’t know what style this is. Try it out for yourself. Dark amber/brown, typical Belgian characters of dark fruit cake, brown sugar, spices, yeast, peppery bitterness to finish. Quite good.

Pours reddish brown with a tan head. Aromas of dried cherry, Belgian yeast, and brown bread. Tastes of dried dark fruits, brown bread with molasses, yeast, and a hint of apple. Fairly sweet but nicely balanced with a little hop bitterness. Smooth, medium-full body. I really like this one.
