With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Pours dark and clear with a bit of lacing head. Aroma is full of sweet malts and a bit of delicious citrus. Taste is sweet with a bit of alcohol and caramel. A bit of a weak finish but overall I enjoyed it especially with the Thelonious reference

Poured a 2013 12 oz bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a cloudy reddish brown with a medium golden amber 1 finger head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma is that of bananas. Palate is a medium mouth feel with perfect carbonation for this style. Overall it feels great going down and was good either sipped or chugged :) Taste is far superior having aged 3 years from when it was fresh. i paired this with a salad that had a sweet dressing and this paired very well. Taste is of dark fruits, bananas and a nice level of booze. Overall, this is an excellent beer to let sit for three years. Glad I opened this today. If you have a 2013 I suggest you pour it today, because you wont be disappointed. Cheers!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a a tulip glass. The head is thin and off white. The appearance is dark brown with a ruby hue. The aroma is yeast, clove, banana, some fig and toasted malt. On the tasting I get raisin and caramel. The mouthfeel is a bit syrupy and oily. The 9.4% abv is covered deftly.

Pours an amber-brown with a big, rich, long-lasting light khaki head. Brown sugar and custard nose. Metallic flavor is, unfortunately prominent. Brown sugar, custard, and ripe red fruit flavor. Full, soft mouthfeel with a bit of alcohol heat.

Pours a dark hazy brown with a mild off white head. One of my favorites, but not quite as great as I remembered. Leads with a strong caramel malt, but finishes a little too sweet. Carbonation is just right. You can taste the high abv, not as bad as it could be though. Overall great beer

Dark and strong beer but not with the playfullness and fruity complexity of the belgian abbeys. Full taste but too much abv-domination. Mouthfeel and aftertaste reasonably good but not great.

smell is complex, deep and tasty but have to wait for it to sit a while to gain enough to smell....not very aromatic otherwise...taste is dark fruits and light banana... heavy medium sweetness, finishes drier and more straightforward toasty malt...lightly hot alcohol, touch of oak taste in there too...smooth and good complexity
