Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

courtesy of Per Samuelsson - hazy dark brown colour with a firm beige head; nice lacing; aroma of banana, prune and candi sugar; sweet, fine but solid carbonation; full-bodied, the finish is long, fruity, yeasty and malty with some residual sweetness and hints of alcohol - robust and very belgian-abbey like

Complex aromas of caramel, raisin and floral notes. Full mouthfeel of chocolate raisin, caramel, plantain and vegetable. Complex and full-bodied, medium to long finish.

Bottle - corked and caged. Pours a rich murky brown. Small manila bubbles spread upon the surface. Nose is caramel, brown sugar, raisins, plums (dark fruits, in general), cocoa, and soft yeast notes. The first sip reveals more dark fruits, raisins mainly, with brown sugar, dusty yeast notes, chocolate and soft alcohol. Sweet malt in abundance in this and there’s some hints of muted Whoppers candy in spots (not quite as rich malt). Body is lively and medium-full. Bubbly but dense carbonation. Finishes with cocoa, light cobwebby yeast, soft caramel and sweet malts, more dark fruits. Really nice beer. I’ll have to lay a couple of these down.

750 ml bottle. Dark reddish brown. Clear. Light beige small head. Peppery aroma with a bold background of rich malts. Lots of münchenermalts. Smooth texture with lots of malts. Nutty, malty and sweet. Notes of alcohol as the beer is clearly potent. Alcohol aftertaste that is long-lasting. Plummy araoma. Neutral hops. Carbonation balances the warmth.

12oz bottle. 4-pack purchased in Calgary. Very dark reddish brown with a good yellow tinged head. Keep the liquid swirling in the glass for a steady aroma stream. Alcohol, malt, spices and a hint of molasses. Lively thick mouth feel. I find it tasty, interesting and drinkable. Restrained alcohol. Dark malt and soft spice. A hint of sourness or acid in the finish that is intriguing.

Dark ruby body topped by a small tan head. Sweet, yeasty with dried fruit aroma. Dark cherry flavor stood out above the malts and othher fruit and left just the right amount of tartness on my palate. Very enjoyable

750 mL Bottle - A cool label and a great beer. I agree with many reviewers about the beautiful mahogany beer and beige head. A rich caramel malty flavor with a semi sweet subtle spice flavor.

Pours amber/copper, with a tan head. Aromas are fruit, malt, brown sugar, and nuts. Flavors are sweet malt, fruit, brown sugar, nuts, and spices. Medium body and not too much carbonation. Should age well.
