COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Graham crackers, ripe dark fruit, brown sugar in the nose. Appearance is a light shade of brown with an orange hue. Palate is plums, candied fruit, brandy. A bit of warming but no alcohol taste really. This is absolutely exquisite. Out of the bottle.

Poured from a bottle at the office. Beautiful brown color, a nice tan head with good lacing. Aroma is pleasantly strong, with yeast and fruit. Balanced bitterness and sweetness. Chocolate, caramel, fruit, and a little oak. I could drink this all day long.

Grassy grape aroma (doesn’t help when the house stinks of grapes already like) and fast fading head. Lovely dark red-copper colour. Caramel and liquorice notes with fantastic sweet finish.

Brother Thelonious has a medium, beige, creamy head and a dark, murkey brown appearance, with essentially no lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of rich, strong, fruity malts (think dates and figs) and fruit cake. The flavor is the same, with an alcohol and brandy pick-up, raisin, sugar, and a slight hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is thick, but not too thick, and North Coast Brother Thelonious finishes heavy, wet, cloying, and smooth. Drinkability is limited. Overall, this is an outstanding beer! RJT

Very good, clean beer. Almost a light bubblegum hint. Great as a dessert beer to drink slowly and enjoy.

Pours a dark copper color with a huge head white head. Aroma is caramel malt, toffee and citrus. No discernible hop notes. Tastes are caramel, dried fruit, butter, raisin and citrus. Finish is malty, grapefruit, raisin and toasted almond. Big on the palate with light carbonation. Good mouthfeel and decent warmth from alcohol. Overall, this is a very nice beer. Fruity, but not overly so. Complex and nicely balanced.

Dark amber color, a bit of sour flavor that augments the smoke in this. Strong but not overpowering alcohol, really well balanced. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
