3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ML corked bottle purchased at the Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. I had tried this beer when it first came out, and to be honest, I was not impressed. At the time, I found the flavor profile to be off, too hoppy, thin mouthfeel, and sorely needing further development. It’s been about 2 years since I had BROTHER THELONIOUS ABBEY ALE, so I thought I would try it. And for a 750 ML bottle for only $6.99, the price was good... I was pleasantly surprised on a few aspects. Here is my rating: APPEARANCE / THE POUR- Served at 58 degrees C in an open mouthed trappist goblet. Pours a deep burgundy color, with a off-white, rocky head that collapses somewhat quickly. The meniscus rises a bit too quickly for my liking. AROMA / BOUQUET- Has a better bouquet to it- you can smell the corkiness from the bottle (a plus) also a black cherry, slight toasty maltiness. There is also a fresh herbal scent to it as well- that is in the undertone. THE TASTE- Raisiny, treacle toffee, and slight burnt toast. THE PALATE- This is where I feel the beer STILL needs development. I found the beer to have a thin mouthfeel, however the carbonation level and how that sensation fills up the olfactory senses is a bit better this time around. OVERALL- BROTHER THELONIOUS has improved in its aroma and taste, but is STILL lacking in proper density in mouthfeel. I feel that the head collapses a bit too quickly, and does not leave a heavy enough Brussels lacework on the side of the glass as it is consumed. But, this is a better effort than before. It’s a good abbey ale, it can be better, and I am sure it will be. I would enjoy this with steak, Mexican food, blue cheeses, moule en frite, and even with dark chocolate.

Nice dark color with tiny head. Smells Belgian, same as it tastes. The palate is also nice and bubbly. And of course a remarkably nice alcohol level. Overall one of my favorite non Belgian Belgian ales!

3.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Initial sweetness settles into a nice full-bodied finish. Dark mahogany color with barely a hint of reddish hue. Little to no lacing but a nice thick head.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Avery Strong Ale Festival. Appearance: finger of khaki head, amber color. Aroma: Belgian yeast, fruity, caramel. Palate: refreshing, average carbonation. Taste: very malty sweet. Overall, the aroma and appearance are a little misleading as towards the malt heavy taste to this one, unique and exciting.

12 oz bottle. Smells good and tastes great. Nice, full boddies, and rich. I don’t know if I would be able to have more than one or two of them. Delicious but a little heavy in the gut.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from a bottle. Deep amber colour, tiny disappearing head, sweet malty aroma with a hint of coffee, smooth for such a strong beer with a warming aftertaste. A very, very tasty beer.

Delad flaska med @mrhult
Väldigt vacker med en körbärsröd färg och liten gulbrun krona.
Dofter av typ juldadlar och lakrits.
Speciell smak som är både söt och salt, men lämnar inte något större intryck.

Pours clear dark amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, raisin, plums and hint of alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a warm, dried fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
