COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

750 ML corked bottle purchased at the Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. I had tried this beer when it first came out, and to be honest, I was not impressed. At the time, I found the flavor profile to be off, too hoppy, thin mouthfeel, and sorely needing further development. It’s been about 2 years since I had BROTHER THELONIOUS ABBEY ALE, so I thought I would try it. And for a 750 ML bottle for only $6.99, the price was good... I was pleasantly surprised on a few aspects. Here is my rating: APPEARANCE / THE POUR- Served at 58 degrees C in an open mouthed trappist goblet. Pours a deep burgundy color, with a off-white, rocky head that collapses somewhat quickly. The meniscus rises a bit too quickly for my liking. AROMA / BOUQUET- Has a better bouquet to it- you can smell the corkiness from the bottle (a plus) also a black cherry, slight toasty maltiness. There is also a fresh herbal scent to it as well- that is in the undertone. THE TASTE- Raisiny, treacle toffee, and slight burnt toast. THE PALATE- This is where I feel the beer STILL needs development. I found the beer to have a thin mouthfeel, however the carbonation level and how that sensation fills up the olfactory senses is a bit better this time around. OVERALL- BROTHER THELONIOUS has improved in its aroma and taste, but is STILL lacking in proper density in mouthfeel. I feel that the head collapses a bit too quickly, and does not leave a heavy enough Brussels lacework on the side of the glass as it is consumed. But, this is a better effort than before. It’s a good abbey ale, it can be better, and I am sure it will be. I would enjoy this with steak, Mexican food, blue cheeses, moule en frite, and even with dark chocolate.

New beer rater, but I will try. Beer looked appealing, but head was very short. Relatively light to medium feel on my tongue. Okay going down, but aftertaste was much better.

Clean crisp taste, however taste is not long lasting. Appearance starts strong, but is short lasting. Not a bad beer, but far from a favorite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
