With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
2013 vintage - 9.4% abv Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Tap at Hyatt San Diego. Pour mahogany and dark white head that lingers. Malty and wine like with some cherry and dark fruit sweetness. Deep and delicious. Strong at 9%+.

Mild pour into Spiegelau Stout glass renders a crystal clear, mahogany brown liquid with an average sized creamy beige head, that becomes thinner but subsists to the end. Very delicate, soft caramel aroma, some higher alcohols, with a much deeper caramel in the flavor and a peppery yeast note that lingers to a long, balanced finish. Dangerously drinkable.

(North Coast Brother Thelonious) Bottle 355 ml at home, served into a tulip, ABV 9.4% Deep mahogany brown colour on the body, crystal clear, turning to ruby red when hold against the light. Small and thin beige head on top, with quite good retention. Aroma has caramel, light nuts, red fruits. Taste also of caramel, mildly sweet, with red fruits, marmalade, sugars, bubblegum on the finish, mild bitterness there too with long duration, hints of the high ABV. Medium body, good carbonation, sticky palate. Very good and highly drinkable.

12oz bottle, Rudat. Pours an appealing red mahogani, Dubbel style. Needs to warm up to release its honeybread aroma, clean pear syrup and caramel, some abv wafts, otherwise does not betray its abv with heavy Belgian yeast esters or phenols. Taste quite clean and engineered, mixing sweet liquorice adn Dubbel like suave malts (pear syrup, cassonade, raisin) with refreshing orange zest and distracting pine. Missing some Belgian yeast complexity, which on the other hand makes it very easy drinking.

Riecht nach Waldbeeren, Frucht, Holzfaß, Honig, dabei süßmalzige Züge. Antrunk süßmalzig, opulent. Mitte Lebkuchen, Honig, Malz, Toffee, Kuchen. Abgang süß und likörartig, dunkelmalzig. Super. was für Ludwig XIV..

Ruby pour with half inch lively caramel head. Aroma of banana, metallics, thick scent of caramel, bread yeast, toffee. Soft carbonation, thicker oily mouthfeel, dries teeth upon finish, Sweet flavor, too - fig, toffee, raisin flavor along with bready yeast, brown sugar. Good sipper on the sweet side, perhaps some age would bring out some other notes.

Typical Belgian abbey beer, just the American way. That is to say that everything is exaggerated, but in a good way. The foam is rough and fairly durable. The aroma is dark chocolate as the main tone, and plenty of malt rich shades, including burnt malt and heavy fruit. The taste is really very rich and have a proper portion ripe fruit in the luggage, lots of malt sweetness with burnt tones, slightly bitter chocolate, a little smoke, a little tart citrus and hop bitterness that never takes over the whole.

Solidny weizenbock...

Beer and music pair together wonderfully. North Coast and Belgian beers are another well-made match. Put all the parts together, and you’d think the results would be something special. Well, dear drinker, you’d be right. Even with the reasonably high ABV, Brother Thelonious is smooth, approachable, and pretty complex. Brown sugar, rich grains, fig, date, prune, plum, raisin, and a touch of vanilla. Why do jazz-inspired brews tend to be really solid? It’s a question to ponder over a full glass of this stuff.
