Commercial Description:
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in the U.S., we have a Monk of our own. Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monkinstitute.org), and the brewery will make a contribution to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education. Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a generous off-white head. Aroma is very phenolic and distinctively yeasty. Flavor is a bit sweet but not cloying, just a bit too much caramel malt, or perhaps it is under attenuated. The alcohol is there, but the robust yeast character and phenolic bite overpower it. Any hop aroma is overpowered as well. From the brewery that makes the best stout I’ve ever had, comes a dissapointment. Perhaps they should ferment cooler, or use a cleaner yeast strain.

Dark red brown color with golden tanned fizzy head. Sweet salty aroma of dark malt, dried prunes and soysauce. Rich flavor of sweet dark malt, burnt sugar, raisins, prunes, dark syrup bread, Thick creamy and smooth mouthfeel with a finishing alcohol warmth to it.

Aroma: fruity, wort, dried fruit, malts (heavy), sourish, yeast (coriander, seville orange, liquorice)... Slightly roasted, red currants, sappy hops... pears.
Flavour: powerful, roasted (but not burnt at all), nice chocolate malt, prunes, liquorice. Very mellow.
Palate: wonderful, fizzy, creamy, very smooth... thick.
Appearance: brown, mellow copper w/yellow bizarre, surprisingly nonfrothy head.

Bottle. Dark amber color with a dissapering head. Aroma is malty, notes of dried fruits, plums, caramel and some american hops. Flavour is sweet, malty, notes of dried fruits, caramel, american hops, citrus. Pretty filling in the mouth and quite drinkable - it’s a very nice sipper. And yes, it reminds me a bit of Dugges Wallonia, though the latter one is a bit better. Worth the price though!

Bottle, 355ml - dark amber colored beer with a disappearing dense beige head. Aroma is malty with hints of caramel, amaretto and American style hops. Also some smokiness hides in the background. Flavor is rather sweet with strong notes of nuts. Lots of other flavors are somewhat evident. Was expecting a little bit more still.

Ruby colour smal creamy beige head. alcohol together with sugar and dark fruits in the nose. flavour is sweet with dark fruits reminds me of Dugges Wallonia but this beer is not as complex as that one although this beer is better value for money.
